Hello - this is a big fixed blade from Kershaw. Any comments from owners would be most welcome.

Features a 10.00 in.D2 ti-nitride coated plain blade and a 6.00 in. double-injection molded santoprene nylon handle. Comes complete with a lanyard hole and kydex sheath.

I am wondering how durable the D2 is if used for some chopping.

Somebody wrote a little about this one on knifeforums - went chopping in the backyard.

Well, curiosity got the better of me and the Kershaw Outcast came in today's mail. Great ergonomics and swings well. I hacked and a bunch of vegetation and chopped on firewood and a pressure treated 4x4. Excellent blade geometry for chopping and the belly of the bolo shaped blade bites deep. No edge problems so far, but these are only first impressions.

Heck of a deal on this knife - the kydex sheath isn't half bad either. I am going to put this knife through a little work when the weather improves.

how do you like the rubber on the handle? Is it soft like Cold Steel's Kraton? Think blisters are imminent?

Well..I hesitate to say this..BUT I bought one and have only done light chopping with it and I mean light and a chip an inch long and up to a 1/4 inch deep came out of the edge. I emailed Kershaw several days ago looking for the Australian distributor but have not received a reply as yet.

I just ordered one. Comparison knife will be the Martindale #2 golok. Will let you know my impressions, for what ever they are worth. Comparison knife chosen due to low price, similiar scope of intended work and I have one laying around. I may compare to Tramontina Bolo as well, depending on time issues.

I am interested in the D2/ Chopping blade issue as well. Normally I would dismiss it as simply a mismatched steel to application. A much simpler steel, 5160 or even 1084 would have been perferable in my mind.

However, I ahve used a couple of Kershaw knives lately (double cross, leek) and have been impressed with the blade geometry, initial edge quality (Spyderco level) and iverall fit and finish.

Given the low price, I figured I would give it a shot.

roderic41, I'm not pleased to hear that. I was/am seriously considering buying this tool. I hope this is not a common problem, and you get it sorted with the distributor/manufacturer.

How thick is the Outcast?
A comparison with one of the larger Ontario RTAKs might be interesting...
