has anyone spent any significant amount of time with the ka bar next gen. knives? if so, how would you rate them against the classics?

huh???

yes, i was referring to the ka bar next generation. i thought that would be apparent but, i have modified my original post. anyways, just was wondering how they stack up against the classic 1095 models.

Better corrosion resistance, but overall edge retention belongs to the 1095 version. As far as sharpening goes, the 1095 is just as easy to sharpen. I Think the Carbon has more toughness as well.

What Jake said.

Unless you are going to use this in a salt marsh or similar, you'd be better off with the regular non-stainless.

440a is really not a "next generation" blade material. It's unfortunate that they chose 440a, Ka Bar's 1095 is a very nice using steel.

There's no reason 440A would not be a good steel for this kind of knife. It's fairly durable, decently hardenable, takes a fine edge and is highly corrosion resistant on top of it all.

However, it has long been out of fashion. Let's face it. Fashion is a huge factor among knife nuts.

In comparison, 1095 is only tougher if it's tempered down to low-mid Hrc 50s and is as prone to corrosion as any carbon steel.
