Does anyone own A Szabo UUK or have any experience using one? I have wanted one of these ever since I saw an ad for one in a knife magazine. I would apreciate any input or knowledge.

Regards,

Nick

I have carried a full size UUK on and off for a better part of a year. It is one serious fixed blade. If you end up getting one I would put some thought in getting a shoulder rig made for it. I currently carry mine in a rig made by Bladerigger. Also, check out Laci's site for a pic of his new mini UUK.

First, a hearty welcome to CPDARNOLD!

I've used the UUK for many years (mine has a number like 12 or 17, can't recall exactly). I showed it to Guro Dan Inosanto, who was apparently consulted by Mr. Szabo at one time or another (Mr. Szabo trains with one of Guro Inosanto's top instructors). Guro Inosanto emphasized the unique qualities of the knife, especially in reverse grip. I've used the UUK trainer in lots of classes and it really shines for reverse grip. No other knife I own thrusts as well in reverse grip, owing to the pistol grip angle of the handle. The knife comes razor sharp on both edges and is very solidly constructed. Grip is quite comfortable for me, anyway. Good kydex sheath too.

I think the UUK is not only a versatile fixed blade defensive knife, but a unique collectible.

Thanks Guys and welcome CPDARNOLD
I definitly like the LAci Szabo's designs.
I can see by the design the UUK would be great for fighting and I would be interested in edged weapons training to learn how to use it.
What I am mostly wondering is how it would hold up and how useful the UUK would be for extreme field use. I already have a Busse Natural Outlaw and another on the way. And I am also looking into geting a Strider. How would the UUK compare with these knives?

Fred Perrin did a review of the UUK and if memory serves, he was rather pleased with it a s a field tool. Black Cloud and Greco knives make a version. Laci recommends the Greco version for a hard used field tool and the Black Cloud for more defensive/fighting role. I believe Fred tested the Black Cloud version.

I had one of the Black Clouds for a little while. Carried very easy and moved very well. Solid and unique knife.

Along the same lines, anyone have a folding uuk? Any thoughts you could share on those?

Thanks,

Ted

I just missed out on one today, but I am planing on getting the Reif version very soon. I will let you know.

Thanks...I was trying to come up with some cash for one...too many knives! Now that I have some cash, the knife is sold...and I can't find out WHAT I want.

Oh well,

Thanks again,

Ted

I suppose you could do effective skinning work with the UUK, but I'm not sure how it would work for general camp chores like splitting kindling, creating wood shavings for tinder, food preparation, etc. I wouldn't want to try chopping with it.

I like the knife a lot, but its usefulness for field work depends upon how you define that term.

Folding UUK was intersting, but more of a novelty knife for me. It was just too big as a folder to carry easily. The knife itself was very well made.

DancesWithKnives - I'm going to see if I can find Fred's review, but I believe he used it for just about everything. Split wood, dug a small trench etc. He said it even throws well. If I can find that review, I'll post it.

Here's a link to the a review by Fred. It's not the one I was thinking of. It doesn't go into the all of the things Fred described in the one I remember.

Nick--

First of all, it's good to see another soldier here.

Secondly, if you're interested in Striders and the UUK, look at the Strider Tiger model. A little more exotic, but the same concept and just as tough as the rest of the Strider line up. Look at www.tripleaughtdesign.com under the "what's new" category.

HOOAH!

That Tiger model is extremely cool looking, but $750 is a lot. Then again, Striders are very popular and if that's what the market will bear, then that's what it's worth to those who buy it.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Since starting this thread I stopped by the TAD shop and bought a Strider HT. It's definitely a cool knife and one I'm sure will stand up to any abuse I put it through.
The Strider Tiger, while a cool looking knife, isn't quite what I'm after. I'm sure it will hold up just as well as any other Strider knife. The tiger was designed as a prop for a video game.
I would really like to get my hands on a UUK and check it out. As much as I like the design the UUK is something I will not buy on faith alone.
Carpe Noctem, I wonder how many more of us are there. I know there are a couple of Air Force guys here and a Marine or two.

Best Regards,

Nick
