I am thinking of buying an Becker MachAx but I haven't heard any news on it yet.
Does any think this is a very dependable knife?

It's probibly "OK" but won't even come close to an HI khuk! I use to have a Becker Camp knife and it was a pretty good knife.

The Becker knives are good knives made from quality materials. Whether the Machax will work for you depends on how you are going to use it. The knife can cut with some force, but it is made from relatively thin stock (the original becker is 1/4" I don't know about the cammillus version) so it will tend to bind on some woods. It is also shorter than a standard machete which is something else to consider if you are planning to clear trails through thorn thickets etc.

No knife does it all. The trick is to carry the smallest and lightest knife that will meet all of your needs. Sometimes it comes down to a SAK, and sometimes you have to lug a pretty good size axe.

I got a Chiruwa Ak that measures about 16" and it is perfect for backpacking. It's not to heavy and it can do anything a knife or axe could do. I am very pleased with my khuk. I would not recommend it if you were going to carry it on your belt, don't want saggy drawers ;) But if you are going to strap it to a pack an AK would be perfect for anything you would need on an expedition :D

The H.I site is not really working for me.
Said that the site wasn't found.
So where can I find an Chiruwa Ak online for cheap?

I just tried it and it won't open for me, either. And there's nobody home there anymore. I guess it's time to build another shopping site. I'm sick of these people who start something like that and then abandon it, leaving all the customers high and dry.

Where's Berk? Is there a way to sue these people? Of course, I guess it doesn't do any good to sue an outfit that's bankrupt.

Here is a performance comparison that I conducted a while back between a Machax & a village-made khukuri. Overall performance was very close but I'd have to give the nod to the villager based on both cost & soul.

I owned a Machax in 1988 for about a week, sold it and bought a Balisong P/C Bushmaster, which I carried for over 20 years. Finally retired the Bushmaster for a 15 inch Chainpuri "villager", which I bought at ebay.

Just didn't like the cutting angle of the Machax, and it also was a lousy hammer!!

I have used a Becker Machax and a few khukuris from HI. The Machax comes with a very thick and obtuse edge and primary grind. In contrast, while the stock of the HI khukuris is obviously greater than 1/4", the edge profile is actually very acute. In any case the Machax weighs about the same as a 15" Ang Khola and it will be not be in the same class in regards to cutting and chopping. And of course in regards to dependability, but can't beat the HI guarantee. More details in the various reviews, for example :
