On thing the reviews that I have noted as I read through those posted in the sticky, no pictures of what is being reviewed. While the one I just did is hardly as exhaustive as many of the ones posted there, in fact it is more a review of the two Kamis than it is of the Tarwars if you get right down to it, I added pix... A lot, if not MOST of the sticky reviews haven't got a single picture of what they are reviewing in them. I would think this would be required, at least one picture of the item reviewed, even if it is a file copy from the sale post of Yangdu's would be helpful.

Most of the time I read one of those reviews and decide the item in it would be one I'd like to add to my growing collection but I then need to search around to see a picture of it to be sure it isn't too much like something I already have! Many of the reviews the DO have pictures, well I should say USED TO HAVE pictures, the pictures have long since been removed from the server. I understand why something like this is done too. I suppose this is just going to happen forever until there is some dedicated server to store "important" pictures in perpetuity like another forum I am a member of and also moderate. Maybe someone could open a free Photobucket account for this purpose? I suppose this is up to the moderators so I won't overstep myself here.

I am not complaining, though I am sure it looks that way. I am just thinking that a review would be more helpful with at least one picture of what is being reviewed. It just makes it a lot easier for a person to get a better idea of how the reviewer did the things spoken of in the review. :)

The pictures do help, warty. Nicholas' "Missing Pages of HI Catalog" was helpful in finding picture representations of some I'd heard of and never seen. It was also helpful in increasing my level of HIKV by showing models of days past that I instantly fell in love with. I am about to embark on a series of reviews/impressions of my khukuris and feel that photos are necessary. I have been mainly slowed by the need to refamiliarize myself with my camera and learn how to resize the photos to Forum recommendations. I've followed the instructions in the FAQ and am able to post the expandable thumbnail photos but how did you post your photos warty? The big picture right there on the page-I like that better than the thumbnail approach. Are your photos resized to 800x600? Glad for any help.

Rick

Please not Photobucket. The military blocks Photobucket, so people can't see the pics.

it was just one of many as an example, there are also private servers, like the one I use that could be volunteered. Since the one I use is not actually mine but one I have been graciously allowed to use, I can't be asking for huge blocks of server space. So far he has been cool with my using it to host the various PDFs I made for us but I do not think it wise to ask for a lot more from him.

stickfred My pix are not automatically resized, I do them myself with the iPhoto software I have on my iMac. There are a number of free photo manipulation software packages out there for both PC and Apple. I also use GIMP a lot, which is an open source version of Photoshop. There is a PC version of GIMP too that you could download for free and use it to resize and crop and do so much more to your pictures as well. It even comes with a relatively easy to understand GUI interface. :) Just Google "GIMP" and it should be the first one at the top of the page. Use all capitals too.(or you can click on the link I put up there in quotes ;) )

Thanks warty but I've figured out how to resize photos using iPhoto. And I have been able to upload them for posting and they show up as thumbnails that expand when the cursor moves over it. Your photos in "A Tale of Two Tarwars" though are nice and big on your post. That is what I would like to do.

Glad to be of service.;)

I did that with iPhoto, then I uploaded them to my server, then used the "img" bb code to place them directly into the text where I wanted them. Alternately, you can use the little button that looks like the sun over some mountains on the top ox the text box here. Clicking it cause a little pop up and then you paste the URL of the photo you want to show up into the pop up and hit "OK" and it will put the tags around it for you. Then the pictures will show up big, just like they do when I post a picture. Just remember to keep them in the 600x800 range or smaller so they aren't HUGE!

Nicholas: My PDF of the missing pages is essentially your post without all the extra comments and stuff. I just distilled all the photos and pertinent info out of it and made it into the PDF that is posted under the link to your thread in the sticky. Without that thread, I would never have been able to do that and I too thank you!

Yvsa, thanks for the links. It sure is good to see that you're still here sharing. How has your recovery progressed? I hope that it has gone well and that you and Barb are getting a chance to relax some.

Thank you warty for your info. I'll have to look into posting that way and see what's involved. Guess I'll stick with the thumbnails for now.

As always, I appreciate the good help.

Believe it or not, I consult the PDF more frequently, because it's easier to load! So, we're even. Having said that, there's still about 3-6 items, I'm sure, that I missed......and worse, I forget what they are.........:o

Good to see I'm not the only GIMP user on here. A photographer acquaintance recently tried to sway me to PS, but GIMP does everything I find myself needing to do and then some. Alas, pressure sensitivity isn't detected in X11 on Macs, so my tablet can't be used to its full expressiveness, but I've created a custom GIMP brush that is easily and quickly modifiable with a number of hotkeys I set up.

Unfortunate about Photobucket being blocked by the Military. It's the image host I used.
