I know every late December we usually have a thread where we discuss what are goals for the year.. figured I;d start a new one.. moving for ward from this July to next July...

I plan on regularly practicing skills as ususal, but my specific areas of focus, or challenges are..

1) Spending all my "overnights" in shelters constructed only of natural materials
(while I've slept in debris huts and such numerous times..I figure forcing my self to make one everytime I camp will just make me more efficient and comfortable) The only exception would be camping with the Fam... as my wife would rather die of hypothermia rather than climb into a pile of leaves

2) friction fire.. Every fire I make will at first be attempted with a bow and drill before any other method... Only upon failure of this will I move to the ferro (guess theres' gonna be alotta ferro conceding... LOL)

3) Learn some general tracing knowledge (started working on this about 3 weeks ago.. fascinating stuff)

4) Vastly improve my knowledge of wild edibles

5) I'd like to (don;t know if its possible) get down to using only one bladed tool when out and about.....

Those are my primary ones... I have others that I'll get to along the way as well

What's your goals from July to July????

Only two things come to mind.

1) Improving my plant knowledge.
2) Trying to do as much, if not all, of my work with an edc sized blade.

Compass work.
Knots.
Edibles.

Friction fire is fun, but low on my list to practice as is debris shelter living. I did a ton of that as a kid and still wonder how the ticks didn't cause my death. >shudder< LOL!!!!

Plants and navigating with a compass are the two biggest ones to me. Already been reading into the Compass a lot lately. Not as much of the plants that I should be, though.

Our goals are shockingly similar, amigo! Good list there. And I think keeping the list down to a few key points like that is a path to success.

i'm holding out for when they release the just add water for an instant cabin. while i wait i definitely need to improve my wild edibles knowledge and navigation/compass skills.

Great post . I plan to get more proficient with a compass, try to use only one knife (LOL, I usually bring about 5,but will try to stick to one, my favorite being the Esee 4.) alternative firestartng skills more, tarp shelters, learning more wild edibles, and a lot more fishing.
I have two weeks of holidays starting soon , so I'm getting psyched up to get out there. I have a campsite in a park booked , but it is merely my base station. Most of my time is spent out in the bush or on the lake fishing. I have a solid 9 days in the bush planned out. I can't wait !

More plants and more tracking. Some bowdrill stuff, although im getting fairly comfortable with that. Would like to get more time in with shelter building. Like those elevated jungle beds. I am also gonna build a surplus parachute teepee soon. I wanna make some time to get back into trad archery this winter.

Some more stuff that comes to mind is low light shooting, and some practice with the Sling. I am having a helluva time getting good with it.

1) Navigation by compass and map.
2) Improve on shelter setup.
3) Improve on wild edibles in my area.
4) Non-match, non-lighter fire making skills.
5) Also I want to try to slim out the kit a bit, maybe leave the kitchen sink at home...:D

Cheers

1) Get fitter
2) Navigation w/ compass and map
3) Practice setting up a tarp shelter efficiently
4) Bowdrill
5) Useful plant ID for my area

There are three that stand out for me.

  1. Physical preparedness with a focus on stamina
  2. First aid
  3. Knots - need to practice until they stick without thought
