My first "serious" sharpening outfit was a sharpmaker. I got decent results from it at the time. I remember it taking FOREVER to reproflie blades, even with the diamond rods. I got tired of the time it was taking, and ordered a edgepro apex. I put the sharpmaker away for several years and just used the edgepro only. I got good results out of the edgepro, and everyone knows how good it is at reprofiling blades.

Fast forward to today. I needed to sharpen my beater delica. I didn't feel like setting up the edgepro, so I pulled out the sharpmaker. I did 40 alternating strokes on each "step" of the process. I didn't even have to use my ultrafine stones, as the blade was screaming sharp, sharper than I could get it on my edgepro in fact. I truly forgot how good the sharpmaker is, you guys were right in saying use the edgepro for reprofiling, and the sharpmaker for touchups! The sharpmaker is a real bargin, and an awesome tool!

Yep, that is the same thing i did.

By the way I hate doing major bevel changes on the Apex. It is better than the Sharpmaker for that purpose but is still very slow.

Hmm. I thought that the EP with the 120# stone cut pretty fast. Faster then a DMT D8X. I don't have a D8XX. I have made major bevel changes, added compound bevels to relieve the shoulder, changed angles, etc.

Paper wheels and belt sanders are faster for sure.
