Reworking a Contego

I have an old Contego, a pre-order from Knife Works. Once I decided to keep it the first thing I did was regrind the handle into a comfortable and useful shape. Lately it has become my EDC again and I am going to order some green canvas Micarta. The only thing left is the blade. That thick heavy blade does nothing to show off the M4 and right now its a sub par cutter. Does anyone have any ideas for re-profiling the blade? I have some power tools but nothing to wet grind it with.

You will need to regrind the blade to thin it out... Then you can finish it how you want, something easy to do would've to etch and stone wash it after the regrind. Or you can have a two tone look like this...

Here's an 810 I just finished up... reground, and cerakoted afterwards. But this edge, unlike factory, is about .010" thick at 15 dps =)

OH EM GEE! The crazy thing is that is pretty much the exact mod idea I had in my head for the 810; to turn it into a bigger, more bad a$$ version of the 940/941...:thumbup::thumbup::cool:

Those look great. How did you cold grind the bevels? What I want to do is a bit much for DMT paddles and M4 doesn't seem to grind well with things like Arkansas stones.
I would post a pic of my project so far but I am struggling with the upload on this site.

Josh your work is seriously impressive,,, I don't need anything reground but the pics make me want to get it done just because... Very nice.

Thanks guys!

I have converted my 2x72 belt sander to use a coolant during the grinding process, and most regrinds I keep it at about 15-20% power so there really isn't any danger of temper damage. You can do a regrind by hand on a stone, ppl like cliff stamp do that all the time, it just may not look the best but it will still function well.

If you have a belt sander you can do this but for a first I would recommend some type of jig.

What kind of stone would work for grinding it? I seem to wear out diamonds. Does anyone make a large coarse ceramic stone that works well for this purpose?

I would recommend just sending it to Josh. It will cost less in time than trying to do it yourself and with much less risk of failure or damaging the heat treat of the blade.

I am gathering several of my knives to go visit Josh for some surgery.... And I'm already planning the second wave before the first has gone. The reason for separate waves is because I can't be without all my knives at once.

Hey I have a benchmade 810 as well and I was wondering if you could modify mine the same as what you are showing and if so, how much would it cost.
