Rex 121 PM2

They've been having trouble with the Maxamet blades on the Para 2 and Para 3 models so those are on hold for the time being.

Rex 121 is a even harder alloy to deal with so its highly unlikely we will see a Rex 121 Para 2 any time soon..if ever.

Sadly it looks Doubtful, they had done in house testing with Rex 121 against Maxamet a few years back and decided to go with Maxamet for reasons left to speculation. With mass production they have to look at the bigger picture more then what we would like zero in on. There are details that go unaccounted for from our point of view that Spyderco HAS to account for so they can keep being Spyderco.

So it's it's highly unlikely we will see a Rex 121 in a spydie but who knows, maybe Sal will jump in here.

Sorry for the thread hijack, but if anyone knows, what was the timeframe from Maxamet initially being discussed to market availability?

And to clarify, Maxamet Para 3 is on hold too?

No problem about the threadjack; we'll just cut it off at the pass. :) So, getting back to Rex 121, does anyone know if the Glessers have issued any sort of statement about it?

Doubtful and tbo most people won't understand rex121 except for the enthusiasts.

Maxamet really messes with people's heads as is and many folks have issues sharpening it, while others don't know it will patina or rust and others don't know it can chip. One guy mentioned all 3 of these issues and called it bad steel.

I have and use a maxamet mule and para3 without any problems. Among other high Vanadium steels.

Yup, exactly what DBH already stated. They tested Maxamet and Rex121 at the same time to decide which one to make a Mule out of and chose Maxamet for reasons that they did not disclose. They are the only production company using steels like these and they are often the first company who brings many steels to market. The how’s and why’s of that decision are likely being kept to themselves for obvious reasons.

They haven’t even worked out the kinks with Maxamet yet. Highly unlikely that they are going to move on to another extremely challenging steel until they sort this one out.

On top of that you have more than one “professional” sharpener and self proclaimed expert on YouTube calling it garbage. I have had none of the issues they claim but they have an audience that listens.

I have a Maxamet Para3, and I torture test it by cutting my lunch at work every three weeks or so (since it's in rotation with my M4 PM2, S110V PM2, M4 Manix 2, Manix 2 Lock Back, Shaman, BM Anthem, BM Ritter Grip...). I looked up the CPM data sheet on Maxamet, and sure enough, it said, "Specifically developed for occasionally cutting up salads, as well as boxes from Amazon Prime. Will even do meatloaf." I am CPM's target consumer.

I would pass on rex121. Just because it may be the newest or next offering doesn’t lead me to get it. There are plenty of very good steels out there already from spyderco. I have a wicked edge sharpener with many stones, diamond paste and strops. I doubt I want to hassle with anything above S90V.

Good news is there will be more supply for the rest of you guys.

I have a Manix ll of Maxamet. My all time favorite EDC. Anyone who calls it junk steel is simply displaying his own black of knowledge.

I have two custom blades of Rex 121. I don't particularly like the knives, but LOVE the steel. Would I buy a good folding Spydie in Rex 121??? In a New York Minute, my friend.

Especially if it was a Manix or Military.

Since I'm always interested in the latest and greatest and my current collection peaks at Maxamet, I would definitely pick up a Spydie in Rex121 if it were offered (even though I primarily collect stainless-ish alloys for folders).

L'chaim, my friend!

Well, now that we've got a Rex 45 PM2, when does the Rex 121 version come out? :)
I have zero interest.
CPM REX M4 is all I could ever want in a pocket knife blade. Perfection. I don't need salt water resistance and enjoy the patina.
The patina on these was forced. The top blade has the most actual use and has never developed much if any patina. I couldn't be more pleased.
This is my Grail steel. Just keep it coming.

Did we just become best friends!?

No "best" steel for everybody. And newer/better ones will always be on the way. People complain about some knives only have S30V, which is a great blade steel. I have several super steels. VG10 is still one of my favorites. Needs sharpening more often, but is easy to sharpen.
