HI RUANA STUDENTS. WOULD APPRECIATE HELP DATING A RUANA KNIFE. I HAVE RECEIVED CONFLICTING INFO CONCERNING RUANA MARKS AND DATING INFO. THE MED SZ.BOWIE KNIFE IN QUESTION HAS 'RH RUANA'STAMPED IN THE GUARD AND THE HAND ENGRAVED SIGNATURE 'RH RUANA' WITH THE 'BOW TIE' BELOW THE SIGNATURE ON THE BLADE. IT DOES NOT HAVE THE 'M'. ONE GRP. STATES IT IS A 'RUDY' MADE AND THE OTHER QUESTIONS THE LACKING 'M'. THANKS VNKNIVES

If you are buying off E Bay, you beter know what you are looking at. Especially when you get it in your possession. I bought a couple Ruana's off E Bay last month and one was a counterfeit and the other two had been cleaned extensively. I was lucky and got my money back on one. It was a interesting experience to say the least. It really confirmed what I already know. You BETTER know what you are looking at when you get it home. They will use the same pic of a certain model for all of the knives of that model, so you can't really go by the pics. Make sure you study the description real good. If you are going to collect Ruana's, you need to get the book. If you have any questions, the folks at Ruana Knives are real helpful.

Can you post a pic?

The etcher marked Ruana's with the "bullwhip" underneath the sig. were used through out the years.

Somtimes, you see them with the M stamped into the guard, other times not.

The current marks are:

Ruana
Bonner
Montana

Ruana (Script).
V.H. Ruana (Script).

_______

The Older Knives:
(early 40's-64).
R.H. Ruana
Bonner
Montana-- baby bowie stamp.

(64-till about 83).
R.H. Ruana
Bonner
Montana- M.

R.H. Ruana
Bonner
Montana- M(sometimes not).
Script sig. w. Bullwhip.

This doesn't include various test stamps and the knives done with his son Dave. How is the handle pinned? More pins usually means older knife.

The dove-tailed scales are used on later knives, square cut ones are a bit earlier.

There's a book called Hear The Hammer , that is a great book on the subject. I'd look through it, but I misplaced it.

Ruana( www.ruanaknives.com ) can date the knife, if you send them pics/info.

I think your knife is a close to retirement knife, as the signature was used mostly on those, but he did use it sporadically through-out his career. I need a pic.

Bobby,
Could you please elaborate on the counterfeit Ruana? I've just gotten interested in the Ruanas and am interested in learning all I can about them, including what a fake might look like. I've never heard of a counterfeit Ruana so I'm assuming it was supposed to be one of the earlier models. So far I've just bought those that are recent production with the newest stamp. I've looked at lots of auction ads for some of the older ones but haven't had the cash to put up.

I've got the book and I study it, trying to learn all I can. Anything you could teach me about what to watch for in a counterfeit will be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
DaveJ

I have a knife that has the m etched in the blade, I was told that meant that mike made the knife, any one know the real meaning of the M on handle or etched in the blade?
