Whatever happened to the Spyderco/James Keating collaboration? Some guys were appropriately calling it the Rhino. On James Keating's site he shows one with G-10 scales and says to contact Spyderco. Can you show us an updated picture? I think I remember Spyderco asking what we thought, maybe I'm dillusional, has it had an modifications.

I just checked out the Comtech site with the pic you are talking about. The folder they show is what has been shown here on the forums as the 'Martial Folder', however, the prototypes that were recently displayed here on the Spyderco forum look fairly different. I'm curious too, as to which is which.

There was some discussion on this a little while ago. If I remember correctly, Sal and the gang are still finalizing the design so it is hard to say exactly what it will look like. The pictures posted on the Forums show the Martial Folder with a wider more curved blade than on Keatings site.

We still working out design issues with the "Chinook" (The Keating design). Sorry for the delay, It seems like forever. We are not pleased with the last prototype.

The "Martial Folder" is an "in house" design which was influenced by Keating's design, the "Riddle" and a local instuctor (Bert Locke).

I feel that the Keating design should come out before the "In house" design.

Regardless of how some folks may feel about the Police and Military, up until this point the Civilian has been the only Spyderco designed with use on people as a part (in fact all) of its purpose (not sure how the Renegade fits in). Spyderco has produced this knife in small numbers, limited its sale, targetted it largely at the LEOs it was designed for, and generally attempted to make clear who the knife is for and why (e.g. the "white hats" letter).

Will the Chinook and Martial folders be treated similarly? How? What influenced Spyderco to get back into this very controversial area of knife design that they have, in the past, avoided more ardently than nearly any other company?

Drew - good question and I'm not prepared with an answer. Don't know yet. I should mention that most that have seen the proto at shows have indicated that they thought it was a hunting /skinning knife. Keating's name "Chinook" is probably a good thing.
