Ribbon Burner Forge?

I like it. A nice wide heat source. Not concentrated like a small round burner.

Talk to Jymm Hoffman . I've seen the ones he builds in operation and they really cook!!
Really simple to build too.

Search IforgeIron.com, there's good stuff, and in the forge pages of the NWBA (northwest blacksmith's association) there is great info and builds of ribbon burners. I've got one about half built on the "back burner" in the shop, I may build a larger box type forge for general blacksmithing work.

Supposedly they are great for economy. I've seen one run, it was very quiet and heated fast. Some guys posting about their burners were getting up to 2700F plus inside of 10min. in big forges with open doors. That's intriguing.

One guy burnt up his 2600deg. kaowool on his second firing.

Ohhhh...I like this. I'm in need of a bigger forge right about now too...My question though (not having had a chance to read the linked threads properly yet) is: "How is the atmosphere control?". I need a bigger forge for bigger pattern welded billets so I need to be able to tweak the atmosphere. I'd imagine it's like any blown burner.

Anybody here ever run one that can comment?

Deker yes it is like any other blown forge. You have a needle valve for gas control and a gate for air - adjust to the atmosphere you like or need. I have built one with a fire box 12 x12 x 18 using a 10 inch long burner. This thing :eek:COOKS! I built my own burner but if I had it to do over I would just purchase one from www.pineridgeburner.com/ . I am in the process of helping a friend build a forge using one of their 6" burners and am impressed by their burner.

+1 on the Pine Ridge burners. Their smallest one is rated to cook .75 cubic foot+ and is in the neighborhood of $100. (I believe.) I may get one instead of finishing building my own. Those guys have built burners for the glass industry for over 20 years and have a good reputation.

Ok, I did some more reading and I think that the new "big forge" will have to be built with one of these. Forget the sugarplums, I fell asleep to dreams of ribbon burner forges last night :D

Dave, Jymm can be found sometimes at the FarWestForge blacksmith forum or at IForgeIron as said above.
Can't remember the name of his shop but it's in around Beaver Pa, over on the Ohio River.
