I am about to build a ribbon burner and want to make one that is at least 12 to 14 inches long. Does any one know how much Kast o lite refractory it will take to make one 3x3x12 to 14 inches long? Also is crayons better than straws for the burner holes? Thanks

Kast-o-lite 30 is 92 pounds per cubic foot. your 3X3X14 burner is 126 ci.in, so it should take about 7 pounds. I would get 10 to be sure.
Every tutorial I have seen uses crayons.

The friend who inspired me to make a ribbon burner(s)made one with a lighter castable (I don't remember what) it didn't hold up well. I know I've repaired my kast o lite 30 walls several times and the Mizzou burner is fine. Not scientific Mizzou just seems stronger to me.

FYI. A gentleman named Frosty built what he calls a " naturally aspirated ribbon burner " on the I forge iron forum. Lots of details and pictures detailing the ribbon burner build. I used kast o lite 3000 for the body and mines lasted for several years.
