After reading page after page about Richard's paper wheels I decided to give them a try. I shot him an email and we spoke later that night. Come to find out we live fairly close. We arranged to meet yesterday and I spent several hours at his home and shop with my son and another friend.

Those few hours were some of the most informative I have had. I left with some ridiculously sharp knives. I can get a decent shaving edge myself but these were no comparison. They were easily the sharpest I have ever had. We test cut on news paper, and my arm is mostly bald but we somehow managed to not cut ourselves. We then chopped some seasoned elm. The edge remained the same scary sharp. I am sold on the paper wheels and left with some other projects in mind.

What I appreciate even more than leaving with a sharp knife was the time Richard spent with us demonstrating the correct technique and then giving some instruction so I can learn to do this myself. I have had the good fortune of being around some guys that know their stuff in their various areas but its not every day you find someone like that that has the heart of a teacher to go with it. I highly recomend him.

Man some of you guys are so lucky. I read a similar thread on Knifeknut and thought "I wish I knew someone like that near me". Sounds like you guy's had an awesome time. I used the strop wheel every time I sharpened my knives, however since seeing Knifeknut's free hand polished edges, I've become obsessed with gettin' it down on the strop block.

The wheels, when learned right, can absolutely put some of the sharpest edges on a knife, quickly. Congrats on the experience and a new friend

Good for you. I'm very happy with my setup and Richard gave me a lot of tips. I wish I was close enough to see what he does with a knife edge.

As good as he is with the wheels I think I was most impressed with his belt sanding. He made his own set up and watching him work the different areas of a blade were amazing. I really did luck out to find out he was within driving distance.
