richardj gave me a very ugly piece of steel to play with about a year(maybe 2?) ago.If you've been around here awhile you know about Richard the sharpening with paper wheels guru and all around pretty darn good guy.He makes knives from Used John Deere 1075 that was not only hardened by Deere, but Ohio corn patch work hardened for lord knows how many years.Well,i avoided that piece of steel for months, tried grinding on it a few times without making much headway.Did i say Richard insisted it was best to grind it without annealing it?Yea.And its very very hard?OK,well with the help of 36 grit Norton belts and quite a lot of time i finally got the thing finished.Oh,yes,it was about 3" longer ,but it came up with a crack when i quenched it at heat treat.I beat the tar out of it around the shop a few months before deciding i had enough meat there to make a knife without a crack.Well,it turned out pretty good i think. If not the prettiest girl at the prom ,she's sure a hard worker!Ive chopped up a few pine 2x4's with it and could have quickly reduced my oak work bench to kindling, but luckily came out of my chopping daze before getting too far.Anyway, thanks richardJ ! And im ready for another chunk of that ugly steel anytime you get some extra!

That "Ugly" steel sure turned into something very very nice. That filework is awesome also. Great job there.

brother that knife is out of sight.. !! excellent work and choice of materials all around, absolutely beautiful design... did I mention I like it?? :)

oh, and Richard has plenty of that stuff laying around, to the tune of around 500lbs :D

btw, we need specs or it didn't happen..... :)

Thanks fellas,Specs..lets see...Knife is about 7"oal with a 3" blade tip to scales.Thickness at the spine is .155.Flat grind.Granite corion scales(that counter top stuff) and micarta pins.Bit of a chunky monkey, but it feels good in hand with the grooves.

Looks great!

I like fatter handles on a working knife. Easier on the hand.

Congrats on that one.

I really like the look of that knife. I am a folder fan so dare I say that it would make an awesome folder blade style as well.

I really like the finish on the blade and that file work is beautiful!

it looks good don. you have a knife that should last for many years down the road. i'll have to send you another piece one of these days so you can make another one. just make sure to leave the edge a little thicker before ht to avoid any problems on the next one.

google N214190 if you want to see a picture of the disk which is where the steel came from. i have been using the disks to make knives for the past 20 years. not all disks are the same and only the ones with the number N214190 are 1075. they aslo have the letters JD set inside a circle.

Hey Richard.Do you have a extra piece with that JD in a circle? Is it stamped pretty deep?Be cool to incorporate that in the flat of the blade!(hint hint):D

i have a piece but the jd is on the curved side of the blade which would be the left side of the blade. if i find one marked on the backside i'll cut it out for you. i'll get a picture of the piece i have and send it to you anyways.
