I really like this pattern of scout knife, in fact I think it is the perfect scout pattern. I am having no luck finding better pics of this knife. I would like to see how the saw and spear blade fall into the frame, use of catch bits?, is the saw blade tapered? any pics of this knife open and closed in all positions would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to add your pics and ideas of an ideal scout knife. Thank you in advance,

Up here in Canada there are a LOT of Richards knives. I have found the carbon blades to be pretty decent but the stainless to REALLY suck. ;-))) I think the saw blade is actually a fish scaler with no edge. Most of the older ones I have seen seem to get major blade wobble. Most of the Richards have steel clip on scales with the thin cover of celluloid.

Best regards

Robin

Hey Kris cool scout but I don't think that is a saw, looks to me to be a fish scaler/hook disgorger, didn't want you to get disappoint about the saw if you purchased it.

Thanks, I was hoping it wasn't a scaler. I would like to see this pattern produced with a saw blade from a US company.

I am actually trying to get more info for a company who may be interested in producing this pattern.

First knife I owned back in the mid sixties when I was about eight, thought it was the greatest thing I had ever seen. Cannot think what happened to it. would like to see something close made by GEC/Canal st for instance.

I sent Andi one of these knives a while back, sure he'll post pics. Blade was carbon, but I think the can opener and bottle opener was stainless.

If I'm not mistaken, I think ScruffUK did a giveaway for a couple of these knives a while back too.

same here, like on a 4 in. equal end frame with a full width saw....

... That can actually cut.

The last "modern," non-SAK saw I've seen on a pocket knife was on GEC's Lumberjack. Not confidence-inspiring(!).

One would hope that, should a company undertake the knife-with-saw you're envisioning, steps would be taken to ensure cutting efficiency.

This is what I think of that would be close to what you are looking for.

A traditional (not that a SAK isn't) bone scaled knife with the same implements as the SAK Farmer? Cool. Make sure it has a bail or something. :D

Very nice example, glennbad.

Sarah, yes, a saw that works is a top priority.

Woodrow, a bail and bone scales are a must have.

The problem I am running into is having the spear and saw on one spring, but I think with a catch bit on each opposing side would create enough space.

Kris, I got the very same knife you´ve shown above from Jack Black some time ago. I gonna post some pics tomorrow (when I find the time).

I hope the pics can help you. These Sheffield Scout Knives are really great knives. They are built like the Camillus and Imperial ones (US-made). If you can find the chance to get one - get it!! ;)

That I did. I dare say I could pick you up one of these tomorrow Kris (new old stock)....but I have to say, I'm not a huge fan of the quality.

Then don't. If you are trying to do a true clone, I can understand, but to my mind the way the SAK is done is ideal. The saw blade will get worked a bit by nature of the tool (if used) and should be straight and not kinked. Plus on the original, there is no awl.... which I have honestly found quite handy after getting a farmer.

Like I said, if you are wanting a pure copy of a certain pattern, that's cool. For usefulness sake, I'd just make it a three springer though.
