Rick Menefee and I have been texting back and forth for about a year now. I haven't met him yet, but I hope to because he makes some fine knives, has strong opinions and a fantastic sense of humor.

Couple weeks ago we were chatting, and he asked me if I wanted to try out a new knife idea of his, a neck hanging Bird and Trout knife.

I said "sure, send it over".....so he did, I picked it up on Tuesday.

Specs:

Satin Finish UHB-AEBL, blade from the plunge is 1 7/8", stock thickness is 3/32".

OAL is 5 1/2", hole size is 13/16"

All the edges are deburred nicely, it fits your hand without any hotspots.

The clip pointed blade reminds me of a Whittler slipjoint clip blade on steroids....it's wider and a bit longer, as if adapted from an Elephant Toenail. I've never seen one on a Bird And Trout before. It's a razor blade, will say that.

So far, have used to to cut up (in order) newspaper, cardboard, leather(then washed it thoroughly) and cut raw steaks and same steaks cooked.

The photo of the single blade was taken after all of this, and it still looks great!

Rick sent me this photo from his bench while he was working on them.

Here is the secure kydex sheath by itself, not sure what the cord is, but it is strong cord.

The total package is compact and very easy to carry, against skin or over a t-shirt.

I really like this package.

Not sure if Rick is going to sell them on BFC, but if he does, I'd probably buy one just to keep in my truck, it's so handy, and the only knife in my truck right now is in my toolbox, which is a royal pain to access unless it is an emergency.

Thanks Rick, please feel free to chime in and share your thoughts on making this very cool Bird and Trout knife!

(ps....those pixilations are not there in person on the photo I took, if Coop or any other friends can tell me how to kill that crap, it's taken with my 6 mp phone on camera....tia!!)

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Face it STeven, you just need to learn how to sharpen a knife! :D

Great looking knife. I like it. Looking forward to the sheath photos. Is Rick thinking about a run of these? I'll have to look up the "UHB" part. Haven't seen that before.

Thanks for sharing STeven.

Mike

Oops! Either I did not see the sheath or you posted while I was typing. Looks good.

STeven,
Thank You for posting the photos.
I would be cool to pull this out at a good steak house.

Rick,
NICE, NEAT DESIGNED KNIFE.
It looks like You would have good control with the slight curve above the blade.

Steven,
The line is tarred, braided, trot line material. Marbles made these 50 years ago, so it's nothing new. That being said, it's twice the knife with the improvements.
I love Kydex for work tools but it will scratch blade quickly. I don't know if I can do anything about that but sometime I would love to chat. My main goal is it be secure and there when I need it!!!! I have had close calls with snag lines over the years and this will be my safety net. It's a great tool that is not made to skin bear but as a general purpose cutter - everybody should have 3. I sold dz in the classifieds the other day and will have more in the future.

I'll never be in a boat again without one. I am sure Hanson could tell many stories about people going to the bottom without a quick way off the hook.

Best,
Rick Bob Menefee

UHB is Udderholm Bohler.
Cool little knife. I've been leaning more towards smaller knives recently.

Thanks Havana D., much appreciated. I should have guessed that. Mike

I tested - heat treat cycles for the company 5 or 6 years ago. Its great steal
Its not a steel that holds it forever but you can bring the edge right back in the "FIELD". I love it

Have about 6 opening

I bought one too. I have several of his slip joints and another little bird knife.

I always wear a neck knife fishing. For years it has been a Neil Blackwood stellite blade.

I will wear this one tomorrow :)

I bought one and it's been kicking out my EDC every other day this week. It is truly the first neck knife that I have handled that is comfortable, light, and slim enough for neck carry. It's clean, razor sharp, and the ergos are fantastic. Rick's work is normally way out of my price range so I'm just ecstatic that I'm able to carry one of his beautifully ground blades. Here's a photo of mine that I posted in the EDC thread over on the general knife discussion forum couple of days ago.
