Ricochet Pics and Take Apart Question

I just got a used Ricochet in the mail today that I "won" on e-bay. All the screws are Torx, so I took it apart and cleaned it and lubed it with silicone grease. Now that I've actually see what the inside of a Speedsafe knife looks like, I can really appreciate the simplicity and sturdiness of the design. The Speedsafe does a little sluggish now, though, I think from the grease on the washers. The knife is definitely used, but except for some pitting on both sides of the blade its in fairly good shape. This may be a good excuse for a light regrind.

Does the tape on the liner over the Speedsafe spring need to be left in place?

Also, would a regrind be something to consider to get rid of the pitting?

I've never had mine apart, so unsure as to the tape. If it looks like a factory piece, I'd leave it there.

As for the pitting, a socthbrite pad or some flitz should take it right out. If you have some very fine sandpaper (600 or higher) that would work. It all depends on how deep the pits are.

As for grease, you only need a very little bit in the cavity. If you have it on the pivot washers, clean it off and try some oil. That might help quicken the SpeedSafe a llittle.

Thanks DV. Can't figure out what the purpose is. I left it in for now, though it looks a bit worn.

The pitting isn't too bad, but there are a few that are probably too deep for scotchbrite or sandpaper. Plus I'm kinda curious about Tom Krein's regrinds.

I only put a fairly thin layer in the cavity and on the washers (both sides), but you are right a light oil would have been better on the washers.

That would make a very nice EDC after Tom's magic is applied!

Good thinking! And nice pickup!

Thanks. That's what I was thinking, too. Since it isn't mint I wouldn't feel so bad about having it modded.

My Kreined Random Task was gnarly when I first got it. The Regrind makes a world of difference in the looks department.

As for the tape......I have a Ricochet, several RTs and a couple Mini Tasks and I have taken them all apart and never seen any tape.

Your RT regrind and the S60V Blurs got me interested in Kreining a knife. I'm seriously thinking about doing it with this Ricochet.

The tape is the yellowish rectangle on the lower liner in the last picture. It doesn't seem to be doing anything important. At first I thought it was gelled lube, but it is definitely some sort of tape.

Based on where the tape is, it might be there to act as a silencer/sound deadener between the torsion bar and the liner.

Just a guess...

Nice pick-up on the Ricochet.

I'd take that yellow film off the next time you take it down.
My Random Task doesn't have it.They're basically the same
knife, just different blade profiles.

Make sure we get some pics if you have it Kreined. ;)

Thanks SV. I probably need to take it apart tomorrow, just to get the lube right in the pivot. I'll clean up the tape then, I seem to be the only one that has that special added feature.

I'll definitely share pics when I get it Kreined. (looks like I need to spell his name right in previous posts, too).

Looking forward to it. I'm thinking about ordering another
PackRat just so I can have it Kreined.
