Good Evening,
It's me.

U2's Guitarist posted below about a Shotgun/Knife combo, so I decided to take a picture of my Mossberg 590 with a bayonet that I'd picked up a few years back. This is it:
View

Now please don't tell anyone that I have a shotgun with the extra deadly capability of opening up very large envelopes, ok?
But I'm curious if anyone knows anything about this blade.
It's basically a standard M-7 bayonet with a knuckle guard. The only marking on it is "US M7" and "Gen Cut" located on the hilt.
I bought it from someone that bought it from a gun or knife show. It had a tag on it that said, "US Navy - Experimental".
Since it said "mental", I figured it was for me.

Has anyone ever seen one of these?
What's the story behind it?
Is it worth many thousands of dollars?
If I have my cake, why can't I eat it too?
(Sorry about that last one... I was feeling exquisitely inquisitive at that moment.)

Any and all posts will be kept in the strictest confidence....well, maybe not, but they WILL be appreciated!!!

Off to cybershop for a gaggle of new Corvettes, since I'm surre that someone will tell me this is a one of a kind treasure, I remain,
VG

I wrote most of that at work after drinking massive amounts of coffee. I needed to look busy and that dribbled out of my head. There's also a whole bunch of Optical Illusions.

VG,

Here's a reference for you. Take a look on page 110 of M.H.Coles Book IV. Your bayonet appears to ba a bonified experimental M16 bayonet. According to Coles the knucks are made of plastic and held in place by the original screws. The knucks are part of a new moulding that has replaced the original right side plastic grip cover.

Value is hard to say; we don't know how many were made, when they were made, or even if there is a military connection. I would take a WAG and call it at $50-125 depending on the desirability of the original bayonet.

p.s. I found the Micra much more intimidating.

Thanks for the tip Strider.

Not2Sharp - Believe it or not, I'm fresh outta that book.
lol
Thanks anyways.... the knuck is metal though... I did my patented bite test and since my fang chipped, I figure it's aluminum at least.

So, VG, how big are the envelopes you open with that beast? Does the extra reach the shotgun provides assist in opening?
Do you use 00 buck to open the more difficult envelopes? Or perhaps, a smaller size shot?
So many questions, so little sense...

A while back somebody posted the url for a bayonet collectors website/webring It had a lot of information and prices. I lost the bookmark in a HD reformat and can't find it doing a search. If somebody has it please post it. I'm sure VG could easily find information if he had the url. Shotgun bayonets are kind of rare and interesting pieces.

Try this.

p.s. M.H.Cole is a standard reference for US military knives. BTW its possible that Cole was looking at a mockup (plastic) while you have an actual production piece (metal). If so the name of the manufacturer should be printed on the front face of the guard.

Cole's example was made using a bayonet produced by Corneta.

Good luck.

I can honestly say I've never seen that one before. Pretty sweet!

Here's a pic of my bedside blade!

Misque - Yep, the added reach is a definite benefit. I'm able to open the envelopes from my bedroom while they're still in the mail-person's vehicle.
For those hard to open insurance checks that the missus gets due to her boo-boo neck, I usually prefer to use those nifty fletchette rounds.
For past due bills that the majority of voices in my head deny service, I use the Dragon's Breath round.

That's one of the best quotes I've ever seen!!!! Is it your own?

TomW - Sounds like an interesting site! In case you're interested, the old 1897 Winchester took a bayonet as well. Used the huge bladed beast that saw use on the Springfield 1903 as well as being the first bayonet for the M1 Garand.
Of course, bayonets make relatively harmless tools like shotguns into terribly devestating weapons of mass destruction once they're dressed up with cold steel, so all of this is purely acedemic. I mean, why else would the wise and all knowing politicians outlaw firearms that could accept bayonets?

N2S - Sounds like I know the next book I'ma gonna buy!

The knife shown doesn't have any name on it though. The only markings are on the hilt. I scanned the knife so that it's easier to see. Take a look at Side One and Side Two.
I kinda think it was made on a whim by someone.... still, it's pretty comfortable, even in my huge paws!

KingKnives - I wish I was able to get my pics to come out as well as yours do! Not to be outdone however, I offer my version(s):
This here is showing the standard M-9 Bayonet and This here shows what looks to be the standard M7 bayonet, except that it's marked "Colt" and made in W. Germany. I understand that these aren't very common. For a closer look at the markings, Click Here.

There's one more bayonet for the Ar-15/M-16 family for rifles that is based upon the Heckler & Koch G-3/91 family, but it doesn't fit onto the shotgun.
That one's located Here and Here

Okay, I'm all scanned/photoed out for the night!
Hope that this was somewhat interesting!

Off to whistle at the "Children of the Nacht",

PS - Of COURSE I had to edit this... like I'd be able to get all this HTML down in one try!
HAH!
