GEC has the Hemlock green jigged bone 72 on the website-is it actually red or a typo or what.

And while I'm at it-what's the difference between Buckthorn bone and Smooth Antique Ivory bone?

Now I'm not saying they're not magnificent because I think they are. They are so similar as to make me wonder thats all .Its the actual bone I mean. I see the other differences between the knives.

To be totally honest, it's not the first time I see GEC giving unappropriate names to their dyed bone color tones. If I remember properly, the hemlock green thing already happened on another pattern one or two years ago. And no, that's not green, not even close :p
As for the white-ish bone, it might be an imaging problem: possibly the two tones have much more difference than the pictures show.
In the end, I think sometimes their color names should only be used as reference, and not as a description of the real color. Thankfully, many vendors offer real pictures of these knives, so it's easier to pick right :)

Well, they also call a 2-5/8" knife a Magnum, so I guess they can do what they want. lol All good looking knives, though.

Good point Robb. and yes .. yes they can.And I hope they keep doing it.
Fausto-I remember that too and having the same mental breakdown over it-lets face it ,its blood red. I should know -i got one. now all I need are more -purely for comparative purposes you understand.:D and yeeah its easy to pick-I'l have one of those and one of those ....oooh and two of those one in each colour:D

strangely I'm reminded of visiting the paint store with Janette . Light Blue?? ba boouw-thats summer sky/ mediterranean tide/cobalt madness/polar bears chilblain/etc etc- its not light blue anymore is it?

actually I'm more drawn to the Buckthorn-if only the Northfield did it.aaahhhggg.

LOL. I just painted the baby room "polar bear chilblain." 😄

Marketing plain and simple. Call it something different so people will think it is something different.

" a name, a name what's in a name? Would not a Rose by any other name smell as sweet?"

I believe the color is hemlock.
IIRC, the "green bone" reference is to new bone (not antique) that that has been dried naturally instead of artificially cured.

Here is what Bernard Levine had to say on the subject of green bone on another forum. May or may not be useful

"Green bone" is a term used by Case collcectors, and it refers only to Case knives, specifically to older Case knives with brown bone handles -- because they are not red, like newer (eg 1960s) Case bone handles. "Green bone" was originally a joke (it's not red, so it must be green), but a lot of folks don't realize this, so they squint up their eyes and try and imagine a green tint in the brown (OK, I confess, I tried to do this, too, when I was a newbie -- and I also went on a snipe hunt with flashlights and gunny sacks).

A few years ago Case multiplied the joke by creating a line of knives with bone handles that really are dyed bright green. They did not sell at all well. No one thought it was funny.

They have been making the "Hemlock" green for years in that shade of burgundy. Has to have its origins somewhere, but it is not as far off as the "Dead Skunk" acrylic. I have seen a dead skunk, and it looks nothing like that acrylic....

I just assumed the "Magnum" was because it was about as long as a 22 Magnum (and it fit with a #22 frame number).

I always thought the 22 Magnum was a great name for a small gunstock pattern. Kudos to the marketing arm of GEC. Not so much so on the Hemlock???

This is my Hemlock Green Bone 73. Never could find the green in this one, either.
