I just bought a CRKT Alaska Pro Hunter Wrangell and the mini-catalogue that came with it says they are AUS-8 steel.

Looking around the internet I find them called 440A and AUS-6 in AG Russel ads and others, so have they changed over from the AUS-8?

This site had it two different ways in one ad......AUS8 above and then 440A down in the Specs.

What really IS going on?

AU-8 is similar to 440B and makes a good blade .I have the CS Master Hunter in AU-8 and I'm very satisfied. AU-6 is simlair to 440A and will not make a satisfactory blade IMHO . Call them and ask !!

I'm more concerned about the one I just bought. All I have to verify that it's AU-8 is the mini-catalogue that came with it. I don't see how ANYBODY could verify that it's AU-8 from that.

I'm hoping that it was old stock and really AU-8......it does appear that there's a change to lesser steel in the works. If they'd stamp the blades one could KNOW what the steel is for sure.

I'm going to check the numbers on the catalogue to see if I can figure out a date. If I can give CRKT a number maybe they can tell me something.

I got this on sale for $59.95 and I think it was on sale because they had these laying around for a while (at 99.95) and wanted to move them out.

I would buy another one if I could be sure it was AU-8 instead of 440A or AU-6.

Try using it for a while. If it preforms to your needs then it does not matter what steel it is.

Funny the link you gave was to an outfit in Intercourse,PA......never heard of that city.

I just got one of those Wrangels myself, nice knife for the money

Oh......talk about money!!!!

I go to Cabela's just to spend my credit card points. Turns out I have about 40 free dollars built up. So I see the Wrangell on sale for $59 from $99. It's a beautiful knife--and AUS-8 (so they say).

At the check-out they tell me they're giving the Cabela's Club members $10 off for every $50 and above purchase......

So the knife ends up costing me about $11 of my own pocket.

I just hope CRKT can verify that they just started going over to the 440A and that mine is old stock.

Then If I can still get it at the sale price......I'll go back and buy another one with my own money and give it to some deserving person for Christmas.

Yeah, it's a great-looking knife.

Well, that's true in one sense.....but I may not use it much. If I can get e-mail documentation from CRKT that these are AUS-8......I might buy a couple more at $59 for trading or selling or gifting.

If they've gone over to 440A for this model then the old AUS-8s might make me a few bucks on e-Bay because people always want what they can't get.

Thanks.....unfortunately, I don't think I'll be taking a gamble on these.

Here's the e-mail:

When it was first released the Wrangell was made with AUS 8 steel and it was switched from AUS 8 to 440A at the end of 2004. Unfortunately there are no marks that indicate which steel your current knife is made out of. If they had the knife before 2004 then it very well could be made out of AUS 8.

I will check with my Cabela's to see if they might have documentation as to when they took delivery on my knife, but this looks like there would be no sure way to prove it was before the changeover to 440A.

Thanks to all for the responses.
