I have heard very positive things about the Riddle of Steel seminars so I went the James Keatings web page to learn more about it but it says that seminar is on indefinate "hold". Does anyone know why?

More importantly, does anyone know of a similar seminar (1 to 3 days) that might come to (or near) Ohio???

Thanks,
Eek

Mr. Keating was just in Ohio in mid March. Rumor has it that he may be coming to this part of the country again in August. Nothing definite yet.

I didn't see anything on his site that mentioned Ohio in March. Does he post his schedule anywhere so you can know where his seminars will be?

Was he visiting a particular dojo when he came to Ohio? If so does that dojo have a site that I could watch for an upcoming schedule?

Thanks,
Eek

I went to this web page:

http://www.jamesakeating.com/maajak1.html

BUT I didn't see any schedule, just links, am I missing something?

@Sidewinder
Thanks, I'd appreciate you asking Mr. Keating when he might be in or near Ohio. I'd also like to get more specifics on the seminars: how many days, what is covered, do they start at a "beginner" level, intermediate, or advanced, etc. Thanks again!

Are there other seminars with a good reputation, geared for beginners other than the "Riddle" seminars?

PS: Just out of curiousity, what is the "Riddle" of steel?

Answer: steel is not as strong as the hand that wields it. True?

If your interested in defensive applications Mike Janich teaches a very informative tactical folder class through Spyderco. It goes from beginners through advanced. The class is usually in Golden Colorado, but he taught in Ohio in February. Details can be found on at spyderco.com under "recent news"

I am starting a "tour" of places to do introductory seminars to the art of Sayoc Kali.

Thus far, i've done seminars in NY, Brooklyn, Long island, Chicago, and have northeast pennsylvania scheduled at the end of this month.

Ohio, and California are on my list in the next few months...

are you interested??

please check out our information on Sayoc Kali.

Just got done with a 2 day seminar with JAK held in Concord, CA at Mavericks Gym.

Great seminar and a great man...

eekman, I did ask about his schedule and about the Riddle. He said that he was in Ohio 2 weeks ago and does not have any definate plans on returning. However he did say that Dayton PD was interested in having him out there. Also he mention that some group wanted to have a Riddle-like training in Ohio. Keep your ears open and keep visiting his site for updates.

As for the Riddle, JAK said that he is having issues with the ferry company and will have future Riddles once things get worked out.

@Sidewinder:
Thanks for checking on ROS seminars coming to Ohio. I wish I would have heard of the one that was here a couple of weeks ago. I'll try to watch Keatings web site more often - but I'm not sure the Ohio seminar was listed? (but I could have just missed it).

Thanks again. Maybe I'll luck out and the Dayton PD seminar will happen this year AND be open to the public.

@Ray
Thanks, I sent you an email.

Thanks everyone for the input. I really hope to find something in Ohio and getting started on some basic training.

Eekman,

I would contact Jeff Chung and check out his stuff. I've never trained with him but he does teach Sayoc. I think you might like it. I study Sayoc where I live and it offers an excellent basis to learn other blade arts.

Good luck in your search,

S.

Eekman,

Went to a 3+ hour class with Guro Jeff in NYC. Very good! :) Did a short review in the FMA forum of this Tactics & Training section of Bladeforums at the end of February or beginning of March. Material was suitable for both relative beginners and more experienced practitioners.

Ray Smith,
If you've got Riddle of Steel info , would you email it to me as well? I got the Gunting tapes, by the way. Thanks.

Having attended and taught at several of Jim Keating's Riddles I'm hopeful he is successful in reestablishing this excellent training adventure as an annual affair.

Jim pours tremendous effort into the Riddle. It is a riddle in itself of logistics, reservations, equipment, co-instructors and guest speakers, fun stuff to give away or offer for sale, gifts, feeding of the students and cadre, sightseeing along the river, and just plain old fun.

It is labor intensive and an impressive investment for Jim. Moreso, he believes in the Riddle as a vehicle for training and improvement in the arts. It is unique to Jim and I've not seen anyone else except for Mr. Worden with his own "Water and Steel" camps who has pulled such an outing off year after year.

The events of 9-11 hit the Riddle hard. An upcoming event at the same time as 9-11 stopped students from flying in, and generally put a real hurt on Mr. Keating. He's since elected, to my knowledge, to reevaluate a number of things to include the Riddle.

I expect, knowing Jim as I feel I do, that he will be successful in bringing the Riddle of Steel back in the near future. When he does it will have evolved and will be better than ever before. Further, the Quality that Jim is noted for with respect to this specific camp will be to his standards...which are high.

Fighting Knives was the first cutlery publication to cover the Riddle of Steel...several times:D It became a great getaway for me and a wonderful training experience. Plus, I met many great and gracious people on the Snake. Overall I'd rate the Riddle as Jim Keating's greatest accomplishment as a professional trainer in the Arts. There is simply nothing like it anywhere else I am aware of.

I'd encourage anyone having contact with Jim to encourage him to pursue the new Riddle of Steel aggressively. When he announces the next one I'd love to be there with many other of his friends, fans, and students to commemorate its rebirth.

Just Keep Moving, Jim...Just Keep Moving!;)
