Ridiculous Question: Any makers who "Frankenstein" designs?

I just can't resist asking, and I'm assuming it is a pipe dream.

Are there any sources where I can get knives to be Frankensteined and reassembled?

I'm willing to throw away a substantial amount for a Languiole handle + Pattadese blade.

I need help, please!

There is a subforum here for this sort of thing, unfortunately no one ever goes there, as I have learned firsthand. If I were you, I'd look around for mod threads and, if the quality of work looks decent, contact the person who did the work. I've done this a few times for odd requests, and had decent success.

It may be best just to have a new blade made since the tang on the donor blade may not be the best fit for the spring on the recipient. Mixing and matching parts may or may not work well even with some tinkering.

...But that obviously doesn't stop a lot of sellers on eBay that sell parts knives...unfortunately they usually describe them as authentic. You'd think that if someone takes pride in their work that they would take credit for it. But there's more money in lies than the truth (people seldom like hearing the truth).

I've seen HONEST custom work from forum members on bladeforums. I don't know if this project would interest them. You could contact them. Esenyx and Glennbad are two names that come to mind. This rehandled barlow was a generous gift from Glennbad.

Thank you, Glen! A lot of work went into this rehandle and it turned out great.

To be honest, in hand I never felt much difference between the handle of a Laguiole and a resolza...so I'm not sure it would make a big difference switching them.
Blade shape is quite different indeed.
And taste is taste ;) so I hope you find someone who's willing to make your wish come true :)

The above suggestion (a Logudoresa) is a good one if you're bothered by the "flat" butt of the resolza handle.
Yet, there are other differences between the two handles (bolsters, just to name one) so it's up to you and your Franken-wishes :D

Thanks to everyone. I'll do some serious digging up. Languiole blades are just too stubby for me, and Pattadese handles are too sleek. Just wanted to combine the elegance of both.

The Logudoresa is in my opinion one of the best folder pattern ever.
It mixes the beautiful lines of the resolza with a spanish flavour in the construction of the locking mechanism.
It is the locking that is both shared by the navaja, the laguiole and the logudoresa

I would be hesitant to trust anyone's workmanship who says they can just slip the pattada blade into a laguiole handle. I'd be willing to bet that you'd either have to have a new blade, spring or both made for the knife to work properly. My suggestion would be to just have the knife custom made. It would probably cost a little more than a modifcation but at least all parts would be made to fit together correctly and you would have a lot more control over the finished product.

Something like that should be made by a true artisan. Recently I received 3 knives and waiting on a 4th from a French maker named Renaud Aubry. On his website, there is a configurater module that allows you to choose handle material, different file patterns, even different bees, amongst other things. While most of his knives are semi custom, he does do full custom work. I am planning to do a full review of his work once my 4th knife arrives. In short, his work is excellent and his prices are extremely reasonable. In fact, all of the knives I've bought from him fall in line with most standard GEC prices, even with shipping. It wouldn't hurt to send him an email asking if he would be willing to do it and what it might cost, although the final cost would be dependent upon all the other parts of the knife and how fancy you want it.

I'll leave his website address on your visitor messages page. Good luck!

Although it's not a laguiole, here's a teaser shot of one of Renaud's knives.

I have a couple more suggestions for you.....

What if you sent your laguiole to someone like Tom Krein to have it re-ground into something similar to the pattada shape?

My other suggestion is a knife made by a small French company, Perceval, located in Thiers which is THE knife capital of France. I hope the mods will grant me a little leeway here. The knife in question is a cross between traditional and modern.... Modern construction based on very old patterns, two handed opening and no pocket clips.... I find the simplistic designs to be extremely appealing. The F&F on their knives is darn near perfect. The model I suggest is the Le Francais. The blade isn't quite as pointy as the pattada, but maybe it will scratch your itch. They aren't cheap, but they are worth it.
