1) Generally, which rifle design has the least parts:
Bolt action? Lever action? Pump action?

2) Has anyone handled the .223 pump from Remington? Impressions?

3) Any semiauto rifles in .308 that are just as/more reliable than the AK design?

4) Any recent .223 semiauto bullpup designs?

Thanks.

1) Bolt action. Very few moving parts. Very strong action.

2) Yes. I'd prefer a bit more precision out of a .223 rifle. The only good thing going for it is commonality of training for officers with the 870 shotgun and it is more politically correct for some departments than an AR-15. I was not impressed with the one I shot. Its servicable, but given my druthers I'd prefer either an AR carbine or a bolt gun in .308. Its moot for me though as my dept doesn't issue or allow rifles for patrol.

4) Steyr has a new version of the AUG coming out. The FN 2000 is pretty nifty. Not really a big fan of bullpups so that is all I can think of off the top of my head.

Bolt action. Modern actions are very safe and very strong.

:barf: They are serviceable and get the job done. If the only thing you can work is an 870 pump shotgun, then I guess it is a good way to go. YMMV

Modern "assault" rifles are pretty darn reliable from most countries and manufacturers. If you like the AK design and want one in .308, then buy one of those.

4) Any recent .223 semiauto bullpup designs?

The FN rifle should be out in time for the SHOT SHOW. Deliveries are expected to start in January.

Q3. I have heard some favorable comments about this HK G3 reproduction rifle and their customer service. For me, the G3 is an awkwardly, heavy rifle after I carried the AR15 for an extended time.

That's a fair comment if a .223 rifle meets your needs. When you step up to larger calibers, the rifles get heavier to deal with the physics involved with the larger round.

Intermediate rounds like the classical AK-47 and the .223/AR-15 and the .308/G3/FAL/etc. are hard to compare directly against each other unless you have a specific application in mind.

Do you really need to shoot past 300 yards?

Do you need to shoot through barriers?

Do you need to shoot at people in combat?

Do you need to shoot from a building through windows or run through doorways with the rifle?

Do you use it during deer season?

Do you use it on a formal target range?

The 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 RPC, and 458 Socom are starting to gain in popularity so, newer AR-15 variants may gain acceptance in the larger marketplace.

Why has no one mentioned the M14 (Springfield M1A?) in .308. I enjoyed shooting this a lot more than I liked the M16.

My SuperMatch M1A is a great rifle but, not something I would take to the field. I love an M-1 Garand too but, they are not in the same class as modern assualt rifles. M14 fans are a passionate lot but, the rifle itself was at best a bridge between the M1 Garand and the new breed of rifles coming out of Europe in the 1960's.

I'm a little old school in preferring an FN FAL for harsh field conditions. They just handle better in my hands and fit my body better. Plus, their folding stocks are awesome!

I'd second the FAL recomendation for Q'3. Reliable, easy to disassemble & far more accurate than any AK variant I've ever heard of

The best bargain on the .308 battle rifle market right now are CETMEs, the forerunner of the HKG3. They are rugged and reliable, use HK magazines, and you can get one for about $300.

Galil ARM .308. I have one, but I think they are very expensive/unobtainable in the USA now.

Those CETME's are rather interesting. Apparently not too difficult to disassemble at all either: http://www.surplusrifle.com/cetme/rifledisassembly/index.asp
- No tools required...

I'm thinking about trading in my WASR10 & upgrading. The canting problem I have with the W' aside (that can be fixed), I just don't like the idea of no bolt hold-open device. Well that and the fact that the AK clone just doesn't feel right when I shoulder it - the sights sit too low for me to get a comfortable cheek weld.

Can anyone tell me what is recoil like with the CETME?
