Rifle scope advice needed

I just purchased a Remington 7600 chambered for the 35 Whelen cartridge. The rifle was used and came with a Bushnel 3 x 9 x ? scope.

I love the gun but the scope wont stay set. It might help to use lighter grain bullets , but so far locally the smallest I can find is 200 gr. With the 225 gr the recoil is just brutal.

Is there a good bargain out there on a scope that will hold up to heavy recoil ?

Thanks for any advice.

Mark

Not knowing what you consider a bargain I would suggest watching ebay for a Leupold M4 or M6. They are fixed power scopes, 4x and 6x respectivly and some go for under $150.00. Leupold has a lifetime warranty. Just my opinion but I think one of those would be a good match to your 7600 in size and weight.

If you can spring for a little more---the best deal going is the Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40 at $399----once you try one---you'll never go back to anything else.

You could take up reloading and custom tune the loads to you and your rifle.

2 nd the Zeiss for quality and price.

A 35 Whelan isn't all that high recoil . Are you sure that the mounts aren't moving or the scope moving in the rings ? I wouldn't consider a 3x9 appropriate for the cartridge . A 4 or 6 power is all you need. The other thing to look at is the scope model .Is it the cheapest of the Bushnell line ? If so that might be a problem.

i too think that ya have a bad/loose mount, nothing really wrong with bushnell i have one on a 7 mag i guarantee has more recoil that a 35 whelan, so its not an inherently bad scope imho.

as far as powers nothing imho wrong with variables, a 3X9 would be fine imho.

now if ya wanna spend some $$ a zeis/swavorski is great, most of the european scopes are, also redfield and leupold, main diff to me is they gather available light better at twilight and have better clarity and a more accurate adjusment set up, and are better scopes no doubt about it, but not everyone needs/cn afford a $1200 scope, which is why companies like bushnell and to a lesser degree simmons stay in biz, though not the best they are in the acceptable range and will certainly stand up to the recoil of most rifles without a problem in my experience.

Duh!!

No wonder the rounds were moving all over the paper. I guess so when they are bouncing off the ground :)

That had me stumped. The scope was so far off in the elevation adjustment that I would just get lucky and hit the paper on a bounce shot.

I got frustrated and moved in to about 30 yards and fired a round or two and then moved out to 150 yards.

Shes right on the money now.

I'll still have a look at other scopes though.

I picked up some 225 gr to shoot and the recoil wasnt as bad. The ones were 250 that I was shooting , not 225.

I've shot a lot of guns in my time and to me this seems to be the worst recoil. Could just be getting older :)

Re recoil, how much does the rifle weigh? Does it have a rubber butt plate or steel?

Is the action attached firmly to the stock? If you have a takedown bolt action and it's a little loose the whole barreled action will slam back into the stock -- a barreled action has a lot more inertia than a bullet!

I have Leupold VX-IIs and a Zeis Conquest. Can recommend both. But you should still be able to keep a zero with less expensive scopes like Tasco or Simmons or Bushnell.

It is possible you simply have a lemon.

Don't skimp on bases and rings, and use a little loc-tite (gun grade) for attaching bases to rifle.

Recoil can be reduced with a new buttpad or installing a mercury recoil reducer in the stock. The 35 whelen is a great caliber. I have Ruger No.1 chambered for 35 whelen that has been great on cariboo and bear.

I bought a Bushnell Elite 3200- 3-9X40 awhile back and put it on a savage I picked up in .243win.
I read alot of reviews and they were all positive for it, some even compared it to Leupold's line of mid range (VX-I or VX-II) scopes, and it doesn't cost as much.
I have it in weaver quick detach rings, on a weaver base, and I only have about 30 rounds through it so far, but the scope has stayed zeroed over several range trips now. Clarity is very good too.

The best deals I found were at www.opticzone.com and service was great too :D
