I ought to call this the acky brakey shoulder knife. Definately not going to attempt anything this long by hand for a while but it's coming along pretty good. Gonna try and get the hole for the guard punched and the tang drawn tomorrow since I dont have to work :D

Looking real good Mark. Your getting worse about big blades than I am.
I haven't built an integral yet...I may give it a try next week if I can find some 5160 round.

I think Ti is a bad influence on you! ;)

Very good looking blade. I have also taken an interest in making looooooong blades :D Keep up the good work.

Don Hanson lll

Will do Don,

What I plan to do is make the transition behind the guard the same as the blade transition down to a flat for the scales, and then another transition back to thick at the back end of the scales. Was going to use mammoth but I think I'll stick with stag. Plan on trying a diamond shaped center pin from pure iron and I'm afraid I'd crack mammoth. Hopefully it will look similar to this drawing.

You are getting to be a wildman with those lOOOOOOOOOOOng blades.
Keep them comming.

Larry

Man Mark, that is great! I've always wanted to try other than round pins, so keep us posted how that goes. Can't wait to see this bad boy finished!

Mark, If you would not start out so far back on the bar, your butter knives wouldn't end up so long! (I remember a young scout at a forging demo who was trying to make his blade wider by hammering away at it.He ended up with a 10" long blade about 1/10" thick.)
Great knife, can't wait to see the finished product.

Had the chance to do a little more on the big knife and another project. Ended up with so much meat left for the back half of the d-guard that I've decided to go ahead and just loop the back through the hole behind the blade and make the whole thing just one piece and skip the pure iron front half of the guard. Now this will be a sho'nuff integral. :D

Mark, When you going to finish that thing? :D Thats one large blade and very time consumming. Hope it all works out for you!

It should be nice Mark but you need to quit calling it a knife. I've made Wak's smaller than that! :D

are you saying the drawing isn't going to happen :( :(

you'er sounding like an art type knife maker now  :D ;) :D

Don I dont really know what to call it :) I really like doing the long stuff. I'm at my physical limit with this one for heat treating purposes. Good thing is that I have another 24" section of water heater that I made my forge from and enough refractory to line it. Two more burners and I could do up to a 40" blade :)

I cant make up my mind and I wear a funny hat so i guess I am an art maker Dan

Mark, a cheap and efficient trick I use to HT long knives and swords is to line some stovepipe. I used to drill the sides and put propane torches in it. I had one with 14 torches and I think I made one with 21.

I discovered the Harbor freight flamethrower(weed burner) for less than $20.00. Use that from either end and it will heat to welding temp if you really open it up.
So if you have some scrap insulation, you can have a heat treat forge any length for less than $30.00

OH...BTW...it's a lot of fun to play with and very impressive at night.

I remember the pic of your multitorch setup Don. Quite ingenious. I dont think I would want to go much longer than this. I'd have to put longer handles on all my hammers.
