Hello guys,

I am thinking about giving my friend that is coming back from Navy basic training a knife, thing is he's a lefty I dunno how easy it is to use the liner lock on the GB with your left hand.

I am thinking about the Benchmade Rift or Spyderco Gayle Bradley?

What do you think guys?

I'm open to other suggestions as well!

I'd be happy with either, but given the fact he's a lefty, the Rift and its axis lock are going to be your best choice I think.

The gb uses better steel, but it can rust, so depending on how knife savvy your buddy is that may be a problem.

If he is going to be out at sea a Salt knife would be nice as well. You would probably want to gift him a round sharpener as well if you get him a serrated edge for the same price. I think accidentally losing a GB over board would really suck. But if salt water is no problem then a GB would be my choice. They are sweet!

I LOVE my Gayle Bradley BUT since your friend is navy, I would reccomend something with H1 steel. The Gayle Bradley is not even stainless and will patina under normal usage. Under salt water conditions, I don't think the Gayle Bradley would fare too well. Even normal stainless takes a beating under salt water conditions. Might I suggest this one: http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=170 or this one: http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=128
Or: http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=406 I have the last one and have really come to love H1 steel.

Stay away from the Gayle..since the whole navy thing (rust). I took my gayle to a farm to cut some eggplants , wiped it down but missed a few spots. Within an hour it had a patina.
