This second rudder bearing rigging knife is made almost entirely from E/V Nautilus discarded parts from the old rudder bearing assembly replaced in 2013, with the exception of the pins and epoxy. The micarta is from some sort of barrel-stave-shaped bushing (was badly burned), the bolster is part of the cage that held the roller bearings, and the blade is from a bearing itself. Amazingly, the micarta polished out to the same color as the old upholstery on the benches in aft science berthing! The handle came out a bit slimmer than I intended, so next time I'll laminate the micarta back-to-back to get a bit more depth to work with. The blade's unknown bearing steel type is marked with the ship's IMO Registration number.

The rudder bearing story is written up on my website (links in .sig).
E/V Nautilus is a currently active reseach/exploration ship (You may have seen this summer's articles re: Amelia Earhart's plan search in the Pacific).

Some process pix near the bottom.
