what's the deal with the right hand only salsas? I have one in blue that is right hand only, but it appears that the aluminumed handle ones are supposed to be ambi-clips. so what is the story behind the right hand only salsa?

Only the early aluminum Salsas had the ambi clip mounts. Spyderco was disatisfied with the design and made later runs right-handed.

Are the black-handled ones ambidextrous? They sure look it.

If they are, can anyone reanodize one to be cranberry red? :D

I think it would be a lot easier to have someone mill you a couple of slots and recesses in a cranberry rather than stripping and reanodizing a black one. Either way, it won't be cheap unless you have friends with the equipment to do it.

Early Salsas were ambi, but the knife had to be taken apart to change it. The following run was made RH only while the tooling was changed for the scales and clips.

The current black alum Salsas are ambi.

Generally speaking, Spyderco will CQI all models. More so than most knife companies because of tooling change costs. Changes are usually directed by ELU comments on models and our own R&D dept.

The Salsa is a fairly new model designed to provide large knife capability in short (legal) blade lengths. What we've called "Little Big Knives" for some time now.

Very few models are "perfect" when introduced. Improvement/refinement is a necessary part of producet development. The Salsa model has already been refined in half dozen areas and there are a few more in the works.

Older patterns like the Military have been refined more than 20 times.

Although the current "Police model" looks essentially the same s the original in 1984, the number of refinements over the past 20 years have been numerous. We just added .015 thickness to the tip for added tip strength.

Steels, handle materials, ergos, function are always looked at for improvement.

But the (SS) Police model STILL (after all those years) is not a "lefty-friendly" folder, as the clip is not moveable to the "correct" side...:(.

Hi Dann. We made lefty Police models from 1984 until about the mid to late 90's.

We found that left handed people do not often purchase left handed knives. We were always stuck with "older" left handed stock when we refined the designs.

We've not yet found the ideal solution. The new Chinook is a 4 way clip, maybe that will work, but with dedicated clips that are curved, left handed models required short run left handed clips.

Great news on the new Salsas. Especially since they carry lower in the pocket.

What does CQI stand for?
