Rings on the HAndle Meaning

burafan,

I think for the kukri rings, you are probably right - but they also probably have general aesthetic & practical reasons for existing too, along side the symbolick/'magical' reasons.

your explanation will serve til something better comes along.

It certainly sounds like what could have happened if we only knew their real purpose. In a land where literacy was limited, ( including Medieval France ) symbols carry great meaning.

Thank you, BuraFan.

This seems so prosaic, but doesn't the raised "ring" in the handle give a better grip? My hands are not large. The raised ring seems to usually fit between the second and third fingers.

I wouldn't know about the small rings but the raised ring fits my hand the same way it does Thomas. My hands are pretty long but not so awful wide. It would be interesting indeed to find out what the small rings mean.:)

Fasinating, Bura Fan. Does anyone have a picture of these beads? Like to see them.

Thank you.

I pick up lots of rocks. Agate, petrified wood, fossils...but nothing worth 150.00 dollars the size of a bead. (except gold panning)

Bura Fan:

You may be on to something regarding those rings. This summer I was out in the woods making a little khuk-assisted trip through some thick brush. In the process I stepped into a ground nest of yellow and black wasps. I looked down and the hand/arm holding my 20" GS was covered with wasps.

So, I reversed course and got the hail out of there immediately - and didn't get a single bee sting. Maybe it was the rings.

I think the fundamental meaning of the ring is "Don't let your hand slip up onto the sharp blade."

Notice how most rings are crafted with a slope on the forward side /! so the hand can slide backwards much easier than it can slide forwards.
