I just saw this on the news. Mr. Elsner has passed away at the age of 90. The man worked for 70 years ramrodding the Victorinox Company.

Carl.

Sad news, Carl.

My condolences to his friends and family.

This man has had a great influence on cutlery in general, especially Victorinox seems to be the most popular pocket knife brand in the whole world.

God Bless him, where would we be without that man and those little red wonders!?

I seen this a few days ago. May the angels enjoy the new angel with wings and a shiny red SAK. RIP Mr. Elsner. You will live on in many peoples hearts and pockets. I hope your son can fill at least one of your shoes, since you worked so very hard to get Victorinox to where she is today.

The knife nuts everywhere owe the Elsner's big time, even if they don't carry a SAK. Just think of how many people got their very first introduction to pocket knives or multitools with a SAK in a Christmas stocking, or a birthday gift. I know that all three of my children got a nice red SAK as their very first knife. And to this day, two of the three won't carry anything else. My wife is a SAK carrier with a classic on her keyring, and a waiter in her purse.

And Victorinox, like Opinel, is still a family business.

Carl.

We talk blithely about the quality and ubiquity of the Swiss army knife. But there was nothing guaranteed about it.

Carl Elsner kept Victorinox going by smart innovation through times of rapid change.

When the Wenger company was almost sold to China, Carl kept in Switzerland.

Let us hope his successor can do as well.
