If you have followed the Iditarod Sled Dog Race for a long time you will recognize the name HERBIE NAYOKPUK . I first met him on a fire north if the Yukon River 1n 1977. I saw him last in September when he was returning from Susan Butchers memorial service and I was flying out to buy a big mammoth tusk. He told me he had met Bill and Melinda Gates.
When you met him you thought of a time long past and much different.

Herbie was definately an icon in dogsledding. Sorry to see him go.
Sorry to see Susan go too. Shame that she was not able to be the first woman to win the Iditarod, although she made up for that in winning over and over again after crazy Libby took off and braved the whiteout to win that wild one.

What an amazing sport.
