The steel framelock version had so many hot spots I could have powered a city. Just horrible feeling in the hand, especially if you didn't limpgrip it. The framelock felt quite weak, as well.
That's interesting.
I just got a blue original Ripple and compared it to my Walmart version. Both feel about the same to my hand. The handle edges are about identically finished. The aluminum handles are slightly thicker than the SS (as you noted), which may be why you feel more hot spots.
It's certainly a point worth noting, but I'm not sure how much it will matter to many folks. Depends on how they plan to use it. I consider both more a "gentleman's folder" or light use EDC.
Don't see or feel any weakness in the framelock. Both locks seem adequate.
The Wal-Mart version is a far, far better value. Much more comfortable (it's thicker), just as fast, and the blade steel is still formidable. $29.97 in most Wal-Marts, and now available online at most knife retailers.
Certainly can't argue with the value of Wally version.
I picked up the blue original out of curiosity and because they have gotten rather hard to find.
Also because the blue is very nice looking

.
Plus the thought that now that CRKT is listing the aluminum version, they may discontinue the SS.
To me, the original Ripple is the nicer version. Slightly more attractive and better components.
Is it worth somewhat over twice the price? From a practical view, probably not. If the better materials and having the original over the revised version have value to you, maybe.
I have no plans to get rid of either one.
Edit: Spent a bit more time comparing the the two versions. One major difference between the SS and Aluminum version is cosmetic. The "complex ripple textured pattern" on the SS version is much more detailed and finely done. Flipper is also more nicely finished. Making the overall appearance of the SS more attractive and classier.
Both versions are IKBS. The SS has the IKBS stamp, the other does not.
May just be mine, but the SS seems slightly smoother.
