Rit dye on hickory

There is traditional wood stain, and if you like bright colors they also sell dedicated wood dye. I don't think that RIT would be your best choice.

Last time I went to Lowe's they had all sorts of different color stains for exterior wood applications. I believe there is a bluish-grey color IIRC...

Craft stores often have blue, green and red wood stain, I have not noticed it at most hardware type stores.

You can use rit. A quick google search will bring up all kinds of folks doing it. There are other stains just for wood. Some of these products are very similar to Rit.
The advantage to the mix your own type products is you can make it as dark or light as you want. I have never used Rit myself but see no reason not to.
