Hello all,

I'm familiar with how to dye and have done so on G10 scales after taking the knives apart.

The knife I'm wanting to dye is pinned and is orange in color. I prefer simple black colored scales.

My concern is what the risks are, if any, of dropping the whole knife in boiling water.

Will it change the action? Will it weaken any components? Will anything melt? Any negative long-term effects?

I'd appreciate if anyone could share their knowledge and experience.

Thanks!

I have dyed 3 or four knives with G10 and a FRN Stretch and 2 Delicas. Set the FRN models in whole, never had a problem.
Only takes a few minutes.

So, learning lesson.

FRCP (fiberglass-reinforced co-polymer) does NOT dye easily. After one hour, it was dark orange. After two hours, brown. After three it turned a dark purple. Starting to finally get darker. I don't recommend dying FRCP. It'll be fun to scrub the dye off of the S90V afterward.

I took it out after it had a nice dark purple color I'm actually digging. It looks black unless there's some light. Will take some pics over the weekend to share. Seriously though, as I said earlier, just keep the damn thing the color it came in if you get FRCP.

The devil is in the details.

FRN is easy to dye a different color, but I have never tried FRCP though I don't doubt what you say. I'd love to see pics as I am sure many others would too.

It's more of a dark cranberry color. I like it even more now that I can see it in natural light.

I should point out that I've dyed FRN and G10 prior to this. This was definitely a different animal. I ended up using a 50/50 water and white vinegar mixture. Not sure why but it did seem to start responding better.

Would I do it again? I still say no. The blade took on a lot of the dye color so I spent a good hour scrubbing that off and there's still some spotting that will rub off in time with use. The color is super cool though so I'd maybe do it again if I was better prepared instead of cooking it 3.5 hours into the early morning.

The action is still perfect. The clip did come loose. Otherwise, it just dyed the scales and the blade.

Without further ado some not so great pics. The color looks much more vibrant in person. I'll take better pics when the sun is out at some point.

Doesn't look bad at all IMO. Making the knives we use "our own" is half the fun sometimes.

Thanks all!

I sharpened it on my KME at around 19 dps, which is close to factory.

Came out way better than I was expecting haha. Good job, man!

How did the S90V take to the KME?

I actually haven't found any steels to be difficult to sharpen on the KME. I do have a metal working background with tight tolerances and it's helped more than anticipated.

FRCP does seem harder to the touch than FRN, maybe that has something to do with the ability of the dye to soak in.

Looks good, I like that color.

I think it looks great too. I want to try it sometime, but my first will be FRN H1. Maybe if that works out well, I will move on to something more difficult.
