Ritter Fixed Blade or get Becker?

I was going to get the Becker Companion until I saw that Ritter is coming out with his own version which is quite similar to the companion. I have a Ritter mini and am very happy with it.

It looks like the Ritter will be a little longer. It also looks like there is more of an index finger guard. ( I don't know the official term) It also has that area on top for your thumb.

Are those the only differences?
If so, then maybe I'll get the Becker.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks for the education.

They are both Becker knives. The Bk12 is both longer and thinner sharing the same geometry as the Bk10 but but with a drop point. The Companion is an even stouter knife with Busse type (fat) edge thickness.

owning both Beckers and Swamp Rats, I would say go with Swamp Rat...it's really worth the extra money.

If you get the Becker, I wouldn't get the companion - it really is a very very thick blade - more of a prying tool.

I have a Becker Crewman - really like it, but if I had the chance to do it again I'd wait for the BK12. I wasn't thrilled with the sheath and bought a Kydex sheath to replace it, BUT I find myself using the original sheath more and more. I like the blade shape and Doug Ritter's track record is VERY good: Pocket Survival Pak (top notch - very well received) and RSK Mk1 (also top notch).

I have the full-size RitterGrip, several PSP's and just ordered the mini-RitterGrip for EDC.

Thanks guys. As some of you know I have been trying to contact swamp rat for over a week with no response. I also don't want to wait 6 months for the blade. A guy who ordered in Feb 2005 is still waiting for his as of today, 6-13-05.

Have you tried: ratknives@swamprat.com ?
or posting on the Swamp Rat Forum? Eric was on vacation after Blade, and has some catching up to do. The email address mentioned on the site has not been used for quite a while.

I might have mentioned this before, but I waited less than two weeks for my Rats, It all depends on which model you order, and where they are in the production cycle. Eric is back, and posting on the Rat Chat Forum, so you could get some answers there.(assuming you want an answer). Here is a link to the Forum: Rat Chat

6 months is not the norm, it is the exception.

Do yourself a favor and at least check out Rat Chat and ask around some. Nobody bites and will try and answer all questions.

Busse/Swamp Rat is a small company using the same machinery (Busse, days, SRKW nights and weekends) with a very high quality. The demand for both has increased quite dramaticly, but they simply won't lower the quality standards just to meet that demand. There are no seconds sold, period. Either it's worthy of the unconditonal warranty or it doesn't get sold. Sometimes this attention causes delays/waits. Sometimes, not.

Would you rather wait a bit for a knife that is everything it's claimed to be, or not wait for something that may have been rushed to get it out the door?

It's your $$$, so you can choose what you wish.

Good luck in your search.

Rob

Also, you're going to have to wait several months if you decide on the Becker-Ritter, since it isn't in production yet.

Thanks guys. I don't mind waiting for a short while for something worth it. I would love to get a "howling rat". I will use the new email address and I will take a look at rat chat.

Thanks.
