Anyone know is the Ritter RSK better to get in SV30 or M2? For Every Day Carry and hiking. Or would I be better with a fixed blade for hiking? What are the pro's and con's of both?
Thanks in advance.

I like a fixed blade and a Multi tool for wandering around the woods. I like the ease of up keep on the stainless blades.but I belive the carbon are stronger ,S30v work's very well for me .:) A strong folder would work allso and people wont get freaked out seeing a knife on your side ,

S30V has better corrosion resistance, you will want to keep the M2 blade dry and possibly oiled if you live in a very humid region, in other respects the M2 blade is superior. A fixed blade is a better choice in all respects if you can actually carry one.

What Cliff said!

I have the Ritter and mini-Ritter in SV30, and am very happy with both - the mini get's carried as an EDC for work days, the full-sized on other days. If they'd had them in M2 when I purchased them, I would have preferred that, but the functional difference wasn't enough to motivate me to buy a new set when the M2 came out.

When I go for a walk in the woods, I greatly prefer to carry a fixed blade. But fixed blades don't go over too well on a university campus in California! :grumpy:

I have carried my RSK in S30v for a good while a it is a good user. It holds an edge and is stain restence. M2 is a good steel, is harder than the S30V blade and holds an edge longer, just not rust resestiance. S30V I hear is easier to sharpen, but not handled any M2 myself i really would not know, but i touch up my RSK every week so its not really a problem.

Funny story, for a while last August I lost my RSK at what it thpugh was a job site. A few weeks later i found it caught in the seat belt of the truck i was in.

AS for hiking, I carry my RSk in my pocket for opening food, cutiing rope, mundan things like that, but i also have a fixed blade of some sort with me. Most of the time people freak of when the see a belt knife hanging from your side on the AT, so it stays in the pack where i can get to it easily. Although sometimes i find that my BRKT NorthStar is in my back pocket, so it is just as handy and dayhikers dont freak, even some fellow backpackers look at me werid when i tell them i have 3 knives on me (maybe I am a steel adict, but youll never get me to rid myself of my pocket empting habit;) :D )

If you wait too long the question of M2 vs. S30V may soon become a moot point. Benchmade's production of M2 Grips is a limited run and is proving popular with the Benchmade crowd. It may very well be the last line of M2 knives BM makes.

Better get it while you can if that's the way you want to go!

That last one was the clincher. Decided to grab it while I can, you chaps convinced me. I just ordered it. Supposed to be delivered in June.
Will let you know what it's like. Thanks to all of you for your advice.

The other day my father was splitting decent sized logs with my RSK Ritter mini in S30V steel. He would hit the spine of the blade with another log. It showed no chips or scratches in the blade and was relatively sharp afterwards, but I sharpened it all the same. I haven't handled M2 steel, but the S30V certainly stood up to the task. I do however feel more comfortable with a fixed blade.

I have a 710 in M2 and I love it. I think you can't loose with the M2 grip. If you don't like it you shouldn't have much problem getting most if not all your money back out of it if you take care of it. I prefer to carry a fixed blade whenever possible. I have a BRKT Fox River and OMF on order. I am going to try to EDC the OMF. It is smaller OAL and less tactical looking than the 710HS so it shouldn't scare too many sheep at work.
