Besides the blade steel/shape, they look like the same knife.

I am unable to use search.

I'm looking for a knife to just toss into a survival pack and forget about it, for preparedness.

I already have a regular combo edge griptilian. Is this RSK an upgrade that is worth it?

The steel and shape is what makes it a different knife.

Many will say that the Ritter Grip is an upgrade, for your purposes, it doesn't matter.

It's not really an upgrade, rather a design change for use as a survival folder, aside from steel choice.

It doesnt matter.. Choose whatever blade shape or steel you like better.. Go for whatevers affordable. The only true upgrade are the wilkins handle replacements to make them solid g-10 or whatever.. It makes a huge difference..

My only Grip is a Ritter, but I did buy a 550HG as a gift for a friend and played with it for a little while. Skimo nailed it, different blade shape and steel, but otherwise the same knife. Its not so much an upgrade, but just slightly different.

is it going to be a big difference in a survival situation? Its only use is to sit in the pack for emergencies.

I have a mini grip, and a CRKT m16 for edc. I also have an RSK MK5 in my survival kit.

That is subjective( is that even the right word).. The few s30v versions I had would chip under medium use.. And the 551 blade shape is more utility oriented.. So Yes and NO..:) Just making convo..

When I said “yes” I was thinking of the M4 Ritter grip I’ve got on order.

I’ve had one in M2 but never in S30v.

I think a spyderco Salt knife would be more fitting for your situation. Google em. The blade is made of H1 steel which WILL NOT rust while sitting in your pack for extended periods of time, even if your stuff gets drenched. The hardware inside the knife is also corrosion resistant and the knifes are spyderco lockbacks so they're super reliable and strong. That would be my first choice for your needs.
However if you're still dead set on getting a griptilian you may want to check out the griptilian H20. It also has a super corrosion resistant blade.

Trimcut123: On a side note I would like to hear more about the s30v ritter grips you had that chipped under medium use. Got any pictures or care to indulge?

My Ritter Grip chipped under light-medium use. The factory edge angle came like a scalpel, really sharp but too thin, I reprofiled it and it has been fine ever since.

I also got a set of orange Wilkins, they are heavier than the original grips, but there are really nice.

I think you would be better served by a Victorinox One Handed Trekker or Farmer than throwing a $100 knife in your pack for emergencies. I have backup knives in my pack, that are good cheap alternatives to my EDC knives. IMO, the Grips beg to be used, and I can't think of carrying any grip that wouldn't ride in my pocket ready for use.
