I started a thread yesterday about my new knife (perfect marraige). I have the Ritter mini grip with orange Wilkins grip handles. Again awesome knife. but now I want to have a thumb opening hole instead of the thumb studs.

Can anyone recommend someone that can do a quality mill job on my blade?

Thanks in advance.

BRIAN

P.S. I'm still working on taking pics...

I've search all day, with no results. Has anyone even heard of someone having a thumb hole put into a blade that previously had a thumb stud?

I have drilled a hole in 13C26 blade steel.

I got a tungsten carbide drill bit(masonry bit) sharpened professionally for drilling metal rather than masonry, it was the only drill bit available to me that was harder than the blade steel, and set up the blade on a drill press and it cut through like butter.

S30V may be a different kettle of fish but with 13C26 it was really quite simple.

I know S30V can be brittle..So it should be a bit worse
If I try it .. It will not be with a full size bit..
I would just mill it slowly with a lot of cutting fluid.. alot...

most of those holes are cut with a cnc or laser if I am correct. Drilling it out would require a ton of cooling liquid to not mess up the HT.

Look for someone in your area that does Electron Discharge Machining (EDM). They can burn a round hole or other shapes very easily without affecting the heat treat.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I think I'll leave the thumb stud. It didn't occur to me at the time I posted that most machined metals are AL or non heat treated steel. The water or laser option would probably work, but sounds like a PITA and probably not worth the cost.
