Hi,
Firstly this is my first post,so hello everyone. I have been lurking a while to gather info on my first purchase of a high end folder. I decided on a ritter grip and it just arrive today. My first impression are that it was money well spent. The only question I have though is that there seems to be a rattle in the axis lock when the knife is closed. when i open it,though it goes away. Is this normal? Thank you in advance for any help you could offer.

This appears to be the "stop pin rattle," and yes it is normal. If it bothers you enough, you can stop it by using loctite or the nail polish trick.

My Rittergrip has no rattle what-so-ever.

I've read some say that the blade is very loose when unlocked (picture rocking the handle with the blade pointed downward and the blade swinging loosely), but my blade will stay where placed unless a fair amount of inertia is imparted on it (like a hard wrist flip).

Could also be the springs rattling when the blade is closed. I figured this out by pushing hard on one side of the axis lock bar in towards the handle and shaking. Then tried the other side. The left side spring seems to rattle just a tad. Nothing to worry about though.

I used to own a Ritter Grip and came here with the same question. It is MOST LIKELY the stop pin. It rotates to spread out the impact area of the tang of the knife when flicked open. That's why it doesn't make the sound when open, the tang is pressing against the stop pin, holding it in place. When closed, you should be able to stick a toothpick in there and roll the stop pin around if you want to see it rotate.

I got mine in a Trade:

My Ritter Grip Does NOT rattle... does that mean it's abnormal??
I've tried to shake it in every possible way - but no sounds at all.

Also, it seems the pivot is adjusted tightly - to the point where I must hold down the axis lock to flick it open. Is this tighter than factory spec?

Could you be a little more specific on what the "nail polish trick" is?
Thanks

You can stop the rattle by putting some loctite where the pivot-pin and liners meet. The "nail polish trick" is the same thing, but using some clear nail polish. I read about the "nail polish trick" on another thread. I think it is for people who don't have loctite available.

I had the same rattle on my 556 Mini Grip, and I solved the problem with some loctite. Just make sure you don't touch the knife for at least 24 hours if you use loctite.

Thanks, Guys!
Upon close inspection it is the stop pin. If I squeeze the handle near it while closed the rattling stops completely. The knife is also pretty loose, meaning I can easily flick it open with a flick of the wrist. I think if I tighten the pivot screw it will stop the rattle and where the knife is loose I don,t think it will make the action of deploying the blade too tight. One other question. I see that bench made offers the blue box screw driver set. Does any on know if these "six-lobe" screwdrivers are available at hardware stores as well?
Thanks again for all your help. You guys sure make a first time poster feel welcome:D

Rattle or no rattle, the Ritter Grips should be fine. Now go cut something to celebrate.

I forgot, welcome to the forums, where your obsessive compulsive behavior is nurtured.

Those screws are Torx head screws: T6 for clip screws, T10 for pivot screw. Just about any decent place that sells tools should have them these days.

My full sized RSK does have blade play when the knife is closed. The anterior part of the blade can make contact with the liners if rattled.
It does, however, have a smooth action and locks up tight when deployed. My favorite knife.

The beauty of the Axis Lock is that you can "tune" your knife so that it has exactly the opening characteristics that you desire. The tools that I use to do this are:
A T10 Torx driver
Loctite 243 (blue product, but in a red tube..)
Militec-1 oil

I remove the blade and washers, treat them with Militec-1 and reassemble. With a little blue Loctite on the threads of the pivot screw I tighten it to the point that the blade will not quite move by gravity alone when the Axis studs are held back.
This leaves me with a knife that glides open when thumbed and locks up like a vault. I don't usually flick my knife open, but the way I have my pivot set means that it will flick open, but only if the studs are held back.

Regarding the stop pin sleeve rattle - it's not a problem. If you flick the stop pin sleeve with a toothpick you should see it rotate. Some will rattle when closed, but I have many many Axis Lock knives and only my 710 has a rattle.
As other guys have said, it can be fixed with Loctite, but I have left mine as-is. It means you get an even wear over the whole of the sleeve.

Welcome to the Forum Scott! ...and congratulations for getting your Grip!

I did what DVSDEV suggested some time ago and haven't regretted it. Get the Husky torx set at Home Depot.
