I am a big fan of Bill Bagwell and I have a few and just ordered another HB with stag from him. He speaks of Mike Sastre from River City Sheaths very Highly. I have some of Mike's Kydex sheaths but I really wanted to try one of his Southern Comfort Sheaths for my favorite style of carry. This one is for an Ontario Bagwell a prouduction version of one of Bill's custom Belle's. I removed the studs and plate from the handle of this this knife and gave it an over all sanding making it slightly smaller and then finished the handle with linseed oil. I like the handle much better now and it feels great in the hand. I know Ontario uses stainless on these knives but for a prouduction piece this is not a bad knife and feels very fast in the hand not as good as the real thing but not bad. Back to Mike's excellent sheath. I am a hugh leather fan but this sheath so far is fantastic very comfortable and ultra fast on the draw. It does not need the static line but I put one on any way just in case but will probale take it off because this knife draws extra slick and is adjusted about perfect. With Mike's excellent quality I might have to send him my new HB for another Southern Comfort:D. thanks again Mike

I have one of Ontario Master series Bagwells. Not the Helles Belle but the next one down, the name slips my mind at the moment. I agree with everything you said about it. I have no experience with the real deal from Bagwell but imagine it would be an all around better fighter. The sheath is nice Sastre makes for it too. keepem sharp

This is a different knife and sheath but you can get the idea. I believe Mike has pics on his web site.

A few years ago I went to visit a fellow collector friend wearing shorts, t-shirt and my OHB in a Sastre Southern Comfort under the t-shirt. He got a nice surprise when I lifted my t-shirt and drew the OHB out!

The best part about the system for me is that if you need to sit / move around the sheath is not attached to the belt, yet still very secure. Great for concealing a long blade if you're standing around a lot.

Joe,

Thanks for the good words on my Southern Comfort!! Really like what you did to the Fortress's handle!! Judging from what you've done to it, I'll bet you'd love the feel of the handle on the Belle I carry. Here's an old picture with the sheath Bill made for it - I carry it in Southern Comfort and will post another pic later.

Daniel,

Good to hear from you. Everybody "knows" you can't carry a big Bowie concealed, but they sure get the funniest looks on their faces when you pull one out when wearing only shorts and a t-shirt. Great psychological effect!

Mike that is a great looking Bagwell and I am envious. When it comes to this style of sheath I am suprised how many people are unaware of it's virtues. thanks again for a great prouduct

The Southern Comfort is an IMPRESSIVE carry system! IIRC, Mike demonstrated to me how the knife and/or sheath won't shake out accidentally. But the knife, when DRAWN, slips out like butter. :)

The southern comfort is by far the best way to go. I met Mike about 5 or 6 years ago and have been using his exclusively sheaths ever since. I have 4 knives kitted up in southern comforts and they all work like magic. As much as I carry mine I am surprised to see a static cord on one. I personally have never needed one. Big knives in a SC are the only way to go. Once you try it you will never go back. I knew Mike warped my sense of knives when my friends would pick up 7 and 8 inch bladed knives and I would tell them that they were too small. I love my bagwells and Southern Comfort.

I must say if anyone ever wants an IWB sheath I'll point them towards Mike. Best big knife IWB maker out there!

I will just add on to the virtues of a Southern Comfort. I had Mike make one for a custom Lonnie Hansen Dragon Slayer a 8" bowie, small by Mikes standards but not exactly a pocket knife. :D Guys, if you are serious about carrying a big fixed blade this is the only way to go. It allows you to carry any big knife and wear any wardrobe in a NPE. Of course with any SD carry piece you have to make sure you can actually access and draw the weapon and that means practice, practice, practice and find out what works and what doesn't (end of lecture). As you see in the pictures the Southern Comfort moves with you unlike something fixed to your belt. This is because of the frog stud rides on the top of your pants or belt. You sit down it allows the knife w/sheath to move up the side of your body instead of along the angle your leg, allowing you to still draw a big monster while sitting.

(Ditch the static cord, it's not needed)

This is not just a piece of kydex slapped together. This is a meticulously formed fitted finely crafted sheath that gives you a lightning fast draw with a perfect amount of light retention with zero sheath rattle. It's one of those things that puts a &hit eating grin on your face when you draw it and the look on somebody's face when you pull out a big pig sticker.

Try it, you won't be disappointed, matter of fact you kick yourself for not trying it sooner.

Take care,
Tom

great review as always Joe!

what size blade is on that ontario? it looks kind of small in the pics to me.

i plan on sending Mike my crossada sometime as the leather sheath that came with it is a liability waiting to happen. it took a couple of months with my leather sheath to have a good broke in feel to it on my custom HB.

I have one of those Southern Comforts for my Livesay Sand Bar Bowie.
Good stuff! Even if Mike did lose some hair making it... lol.

Had I thought of it,

I would have brought it for show and tell yesterday.
Sorry Joe.
