Rixford Axe — worth rehafting?

Found this axe yesterday. The handle says — in small, barely legible lettering — Rixford Mfg Co. Aside from some surface rust and minor chipping and some mushrooming of the poll, the head seems in decent shape and the eye does not appear to be deformed. But the handle is a mess, with more nails than wood in the eye, although surprisingly the head does not wiggle at all. I am thinking about cleaning the head up and rehafting it. But I am new to this and was interested in getting the opinions of more experienced folk.

The image is unavailable.

If the head is a Rixford it's going to be a good axe definitely worth saving.
If the handle looks to be good otherwise then I'd try to save it.
You may have to graft on a piece to replace the missing wood inside the eye, but it'll depend.

Rixford's forgings tend to be a little rough, but their steel, heat treatment, and geometry are excellent. Very good tools.
