Just picked up a Rixford marked R-49z the edge is a bit chipped and there's some sharp mushrooming. It seems old(ish) and was wondering some of the history on them. I'm out at the cabin now and my cellular data is running low so pictures will go up tomorrow when I get back to the not so civilized world.

By grinding off the mushrooming am I commiting an axe sin?

I have a 4 pounder. I haven't decided if I am going to grind off the mushrooming on mine yet, it's not too bad. It's a Maine wedge pattern, but I think Rixford was a Vermont company.

Mines a sweet 2.5 lber on a straight haft that looks self made, no swell. Came out of an old fire station. At the very least I'm going to round the mushroomjng off. Mines a Maine wedge as well.

They were from Vermont, but that's common knowledge. They made excellent axes and scythe blades. As good as any of the Maine companies. Sadly I only have one Rixy, a Connecticut pattern I traded for from Vintageaxe on here. Like we established in the other thread, its a damn good axe and what the hell else matters?

Yup. A very notable company that produced goods considered as top class. They were a premium company.
