I was browsing in the local brick & mortar yesterday and ended up buying another folder. It was very thin, good-looking, and extremely affordable. It just so happened to be an RJ Martin design… the Kershaw Chill. If any of you pack a lunch for work, you really ought to drop one of these suckers in your lunch pail; it’s like a paring knife that folds. If you don’t already have a Chill, add one to your next knife order and you won’t be sorry—can’t go wrong for around $20.

Anyway, my purchase prompted me to check out RJ’s website. I got a bit of a chuckle at the silly ‘tacticool’ names (they always sound like B-movie titles or the names of comic book super-villains): ‘Havoc’, ‘Devastator’, ‘Overkill’, ‘Dead Right There’, and ‘Rampage’. But I must admit, RJ’s knives look pretty interesting. His ‘Manta Ray’ fixed blade is drop-dead gorgeous.

What’s your favourite RJ Martin design? Anyone got a custom?

I also like the Manta, and the Kwaiken too. RJ collaborated with Spyderco for the (Spydero) Kumo design.

I was actually thinking of picking a Chill and ghetto pimping it just for fun and getting some experience... But im not too sure on what to do...

When it comes to RJ designs for production companies my choice is for the Volt, hands down. I have a couple Volts, a Groove, a Zing, a Nerve, and a Chill. When it comes to his customs the Q-36 is my favorite. I have two Q-36s, an Overkill, a Variable, a Dress Havoc, and a Transfusion on the way to me in May.

I dig RJ's work.

I like the looks of the new Kershaw RJI - 1985 but unfortunately it's not available yet.

The Chill has to be one of the easiest carrying folders per inch of blade length there is... One of my favorites if there is little possibility of hard work. Town yes farm no.

im still kicking myself for not picking up a Volt.

I have all his Kershaw production knives, i still love the Groove the best. Its an excellent EDC. Its a slim knife overall and carries well in the pocket. But the groove also has a good strong blade.

as far as customs: i would like a Havoc and a Devastator. I was going to pick up a Transfusion, but i thought the blade shape is a little too aggressive and i probably would never carry it.
