One of my best friends serves on the Pittsburgh SWAT team, and has always been a sensible knife guy - not much brand loyalty, but will use anything that works, and appreciates good designs and workmanship. So when he needed a good fixed blade for the job and was telling me he is thinking of strapping a Mora* to his gear, I wanted him to have something nicer, and more dependable to use. I gave him my only RMD (at the time) on semi-permanent loan, with the guise** of "I need this torture tested." He fashioned a sheath (I didn't have one then), and strapped it to his gear. This is the regular SR-101 Combat Grade Ratmandu with saber grind, available at the shop.

He visited us this past weekend, and I asked if he could bring it up for me to see the condition of the blade (because I was curious!). He said after hearing his SWAT buddies talk about how expensive Busse knives were, and was ogling over his knife, saying how "those Busses are like $500 knives!" and commenting on how he's bashing an expensive knife, he wanted to give it back. Even though I insisted that he keep torturing it, he decided it needed to come home. He said he used it for everything, but especially as his entry tool. He said he never babied this knife, pried and jammed this thing into whatever he needed to for his job, broken more than his share of locks and doors and barricades, and did a proper torture test for whatever his duties would have thrown at a knife (without purposefully doing more than he needed, just for the sake of breaking a knife).

So here are some pics:

The knife (Desert Sage with Tan Micarta, which now looks more like my new-condition Maroon Micarta handles! Maybe even a tad darker than Maroon.)

Edge and Coating wear:

No "Safe Queen" here! I don't believe he did much to sharpen it, since he wasn't using it as a slicing tool most of the time. Some rolls and minor dings on the edge, but not much damage at all. He said he was surprised how well this steel stood up to a beating, especially since he is somewhat familiar with 52100 stock and had previous broken a 52100 blade before.

Not bad for a couple years of continual service! It looks like it has sustained less injuries than he did!

* Disclaimer: No knock against Mora knives... They're great little knives for the money and I think one of the very best bang for buck knives out there. I have a bunch of them, and use them for a variety of things. Just not a Busse.... very different design philosophy and purpose.

** I had considered just giving the knife to him, but us Chinese believe gifting of weapons to be bad luck for the relationship, and especially a sharp knife/sword - as it may "sever" a relationship. (Historical context: gifting of weapons usually went with necessity for going into armed conflicts - battle or war where most people wouldn't make it back or would risk severe/grave injuries - not good for prolonging relationships.)

*** Third Disclaimer: not trying to show-off with someone else's service. Just wanted to share and exchange opinions about this knife and its use/history. Any thanks and complements to his service will be forwarded back to my buddy. I can also get answers from him if anyone has any questions you'd like me to forward to him.

That's extremely cool  There's a good legacy in that knife now. At least you know you can trust it, because if it was going to fail it probably would have done it by now. Would love to hear some of your friend's stories about using that RMD.

Just do what the rest of us in the world, that have this superstition, do - sell it to him for $1 ;). Thanks for the great review!

I'll see if I can get any stories outta him!

Yeah after the $500 knife comment, I didn't want to potentially make him feel I was "patronizing" him. But I should've thought of that in the beginning!!

There was a fellow around here that used to use RMD for a lot of tasks... full body weight bearing climbing aid as one of them... unfortunately age and health get in the way of bragging rights...
That is unfortunate... I'm sure that knife had seen more than most of us will tho!

Very cool to hear about one of these in service getting treated appropriately to the knife's design and intention. SR101 can take a heck of a beating.

Maybe send the guy a link to the RMD so he knows it's not a $500 knife and he could buy his own if he wants one after beating on yours for a few years. I'm not sure if there is an active service member discount, but it may be worth checking into.

One thing is for sure, the mora wouldn't have held up. Great knives, but certainly not what is within their design limitations. A BK2 would be far better and split the difference in cost, but I personally like the RMD handle a lot more.

Whatever level of use/abuse that knife has received, looking at it, I feel very confident in saying that it can take more...as in a TON more both in duration and intensity. There may be more instances floating around, but I am aware of only one instance where someone broke a Busse family knife by accident. That was a Camp Tramp and I was told it was the unfortunate victim of a grenade launcher. I don't recall exactly what happened and don't really know how those things work, but that story was enough to tell me that short of undertaking a huge effort to break one in some way to the point that it's unusable, it's really just not going to happen.

Thanks to the OP for lending your knife to a good cause.

Did Noss or Cliff Stamp ever do a destruction test on an RMD? I do know a KDSH was used to chop a car in half so I'm pretty sure that the RMD could handle similar tasks if one was so inclined.

Isn’t there a saying that, if you gift a knife the person gives a coin ???? Or something like that ? It supposedly breaks the bad juju

Any time I "gift" a knife or sword I always ask for a coin, or some money so that they are technically "buying" the weapon...no bad luck, problem solved! Have him buy it from you for a quarter.

Brilliant story. Compared to some I have seen that one looks hardly used!:)

That right there is what its all about. Crazy off the chart performance that go beyond just the quality of the steel and the design. That heat treat has got to be something, the secret recipe for perfectly cured bacon.

Not that I had lacked any confidence in the RMD before, but seeing the condition of this knife and knowing how my buddy uses his tools (he doesn't baby), definitely secured the already high confidence I had with the RMD.

I'm asking my buddy if there are any stories he could tell involving the knife. He said he'll get back to me. :D

Wasn't there a story from Jerry about using a SHSJ to pry open a car door?
YES...There was that story about the car door as I recall it was the Proto of the Boss Jack maybe??

I had a cousin deploying to Afganistan a while ago. His dad called and asked what kind of knife to buy (as I'm the knife nut in the family).

We settled on a choiless Boss Jack.

A great crew on this sub forum donated the funds for the knife, and David Brown donated the sheath.

Cousin deployed twice with it.

He rode in the .50 turret on convoys, so the finish on the handle was well banged up by the time his deployments were done!

I re profiled the edge when he returned!

You can just see it on his load out vest tonight the lower left of the vest in this second pic.

I don't think I thought to take a pic of the finish when I reprofiled it for him....but it looked like it had been used to prune open crates regularly!!
