Thinking about picking one up as a breacher, for emergency use to keep in my truck, even playing a bit while camping. For those that have owned one, did you prefer the 13 or 15” version and why? Thanks
I’m NOT an expert on the subject
I do love some nice destruction tools though.
I’ve had both the 15 and 13 inch models , forged and newer versions. If space, working space is a concern - I think the obvious choice is the S13. I still own one, actually used to carry it on my person walking the dog at 03:00. If leverage and power is priority the 15 would win. The 15 will definitely make a better “breacher”. I would go further with the 18 inch eagle talon if I intended to open doors, walls or trunks of cars.
The S13 is FAST, but so is the 15 - both are excellent tools. I found I can get much more power out of the 15 though. I have a eagle talon but haven’t put it through any testing yet - the longer length, the better the torque/leverage - I’d guess the Talon will win that dept.
I still carry the S13 daily in my bag ( car bag ). It’s easy to pack, weight is minimal, chops better than my ATC VTAC’s ever did. I think of it more for self defense than anything else.
Winkler has a few Hawks/“Axes” in their lineup that fit the breacher bill as well. The “Wild bill Axe” has a really nice spike end, shaped like a pry bar - well over .3 thick.. compact and made for breaking inanimate objects. Worth checking out IMO.
Again - I’m no expert here. I just love RMJ Hawks - quality tools backed by decent people.
For what it’s worth - I’ve found the newer 80crv2 RMJs hold a better edge than the older 4140 versions. Not that you need a tomahawk to shave with - it’s nice to have something that could make curls for a fire if needed. The heat treatment RMJ uses seems to be pretty on point in any steel they’ve used ( I’ve only tested 80crv2 and 4140 - they made Shrikes in 1075 around late 2019 - early 2020 I think ).
If there is anything I’m sure of - RMJ Hawks ( tomahawks in general ) are FUN !! Something seriously primal and terrifying about them. Much more uses than many realize ( or I’m just making excuses to keep buying them

).
