A bit more than a year ago, I contacted Rob Brown to discuss a project: take his Sheffield Bowie, and develop a consistent design for a sub-hilt to go with it. Below are pictures of the results. Fittings are blued iron, pins are 14k gold, scales are mammoth ivory. I asked the blades to be grounded from D2 stock. The scrims are Sharon Burger. Sheaths are made of Cape Buffalo hide.

Those knives are Classic, what a pair!
NIce score Joss.

I've admired Rob Brown's work for some time, but just the pics from his website. I know from Murray White that Rob's work is near flawless. I gotta get on his list one of these days.

Here is a better pic, that Rob took. Obviously, that was done before the gold studs and the scrims.

Joss - you done good. You conceived a great idea and Rob Brown executed it in his typically excellent fashion. That's a tremendous pair of knives you have there - congrats! And thanks for sharing the pics.

Cheers,

Roger

PS - Don't you just love those buffalo-hide sheaths?

You KNEW I would be in here drooling and offering praise. Some guys sure know how to choose their weapons. You are one of them. :D  ;)

Congrats on such a pair. I know just how detailed those handles are. Sharon's work is in my own collection. What a team!

Congrats and thanks!

Sweet.....ah !!!

I love the combination of the ivory handle and the gold studs.

What a gorgeous pair of fighters. My preference is for the Bowie, but that sub-hilt looks magnificent as well. I love the look of that ivory and the scrimshaw is very classy indeed.

Looks like Rob put a very nice finish on D2,his work is tight
very nice looking set of knives;)

I was wondering the same thing. How do you get such a finish on D2?

I have been making all my knives up to this point from D2 and A2
with a hand rubbed satin finish.I know there is a Modified D2
with more chrome content in it.I think I seen it some were that Kit
Carson has used it??

Joss, Many thanks for showing my/your knives, it's very much appreciated and I enjoyed the project immensely. To all those who have posted - thanks for your kind and encouraging words.

The steel I used is "Bohler" Steel (Austrian) K110 equivalent to A.I.S.I. D2. Composition: Cr 11.8 : C 1.55 : V 0.95 : Mo 0.80 :
Mn 0.35 : Si 0.25.

Bohler South Africa no longer carry this steel in sizes suitable for stock removal knifemakers, so I started off with having to split a much thicker bar on the bandsaw and mill it down to 1/4", quite a job but well worth it. They also do my vacuum heat treatment to 59/60 Rockwell C.

The method I use for fine sanding and mirror polishing is best described in my tutorial www.robbrownknives.com/tutorials/mirrorfinishing/
I used both 14" and 6" diameter contact wheels on these knives and followed the steps outlined exactly. Fine sanding up to 1200 grit before buffing this way is a totally different ballgame to handsanding, it's a lot easier, faster, and sands to a finer finish (unfortunately only suitable for concave grinds). If you can, give it a try.

B.T.W. Nathan, I love your dog - I have a 11 month old bull mastiff.

Excellent tutorial, Rob. You put a lot of work in your knives and it shows.
