I have been dealing with Rob for a few weeks now. I have one of his grinders.
I have to say Rob is great at service and the grinder is a great work of art!
Anyone else have this experience?

Howdy There.....!
Have had some dealings with Rob myself, seems like a pretty good fellow. A close friend of mind bought one of his grinders and it is a extremely nice machine. I is one of the strongest grinders that I have ever seen, and it is very smooth running. From what I have seen of his work I would recommed him to anyone.
Later, see ya in Atlanta....!

Rob made me an 8 inch smooth wheel for my Wilton and cut down a drive spindle for my other grinder. Service was fast and courtious. His prices were also very reasonable. I may be giving him another call for a 4 and 6 inch wheel if he's up for it?

I hope to buy a good grinder soon. Rob's product is sounding like a very good option. Like many forumites, budget is a concern for me, but my biggest problem is having a good place to set up shop. What grinding I have done with my cheap 4X36 has been done in my cramped garage. I try to control the dust, but I still don't like having it in the garage with the cars and other garage-type stuff. I am thinking about buying an out-building for use as my shop. Maybe then I can give Rob a call.

Darrel,
What would you recommend as a suitable motor for Rob's grinder?

Semper Fi

Rob can answer that .
I used a reduction pully system to get more torque and a 1 hp motor. I didnt need hi torque for finishing.

Hello,

Thank you for the kind words!

I tried to post some pics a few weeks ago but had troubles so I moved them to photopoint and I'll try again.

I'm currently building several more of these.
Before I delivered this one, I had the pleasure of running it on my bench. Darrel uses it to delicately finish, however I cranked the belt speed up to about 4700ft/min and started hogging with a 30 grit. I was amazed by the big 14" wheel. Even at very fast belt speeds, it seems like it is barely turning. It was like the belt is in slow motion as the work piece just melted into it and came out in a shower of sparks on the floor.

Anyway, back to the question: for motor size,.... for general knifemaking, you may be dissapointed with 1hp as you will be able to bog it down when roughing big stuff at high speeds. I use a 1hp in my shop and tolerate it. If I had a choice (or free motor) I would use a 1.5 hp and I wouldn't hesitate to throw a 3 hp on it if the price is right. I like 1725rpm the best. I found that 3650rpm get a bit tough to slow down for finishing even though they are great for reckless roughing.

Hope this helps and I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Sincerely,
Rob
