Robar NP3 Plus for a Knife?

I'm about to send my sig p229 to Robar to have a NP3 plus finish put on it. Which leaves me asking a somewhat silly question ..... Can you effectively NP3/Np3plus a knife without screwing up the edge or the ability to sharpen it? Same with DuraCoat and Cerakote?

Any thoughts? Any one ever try this?

I may be getting a Becker BK 5 real soon and I leaning towards slight modification fever frenzy.

8) I can do DIY with Cerakote.

This still brings me to robar's NP3 Plus if the knife can handle it this would probably far superior to any "Coating" out there. but its expensive (probably 30 to 80 bucks), and it's not DIY.

Sounds like a good project.
If you go foward with it let me know how you like it.

I have to call Robar Monday about some firearms I need refinished. I suspect that would be a very good time to talk to them about potentially doing a NP3+ job on a Knife (Blade/Tang only). I'll report what I find out here.

DIY with Cerakote.....it takes a lot more than what people realize. I have over 5 grand in equipment alone.

All of these should go on bare metal instead of over an existing finish.

I would expect NP3 to be resistant to sharpening until you got through the coating. It is not as hard as hard chrome, but I would use diamond to clear the edge.

Low temp Ceracoat can be done at home (high temp, not so much), but you need to carefully strip/clean the steel first. Once you're through the coating on the edge it should sharpen fine. We used to experiment with it at Predator Custom and we just went through the material with diamond and then the edge sharpened normally.

Duracoat is no big deal.

I talked to the people at Robar they can NP3 plus a knife it's suppose to work out really well and they only charge 50 bucks.

Just as a note Diamond Blade knifes have a NP3 coat.
