Has anyone done or heard of using Gunter's super quench on 1045 steel for a knife blade using the clay method for a temper line without cracking. Or is it just as well and safer to use water. I was wondering if it would effect the hamon at all.
Never heard of using superquench on tool steels to be honest. I'd love to hear experiences from anybody who's tried it though. I've heard tales of making a chisel out of A36, SuperQuenching it, and then using the chisel to repeatedly cold cut the mother bar, but never about anything higher carbon than that.
